I know this is probably one of the weirdest-sounding entries most peope would come across here.. and honesly it seems ill-fitting to me, but I don't know where else to post. I'm severely vitamin D deficient normally. So I've been put on vitamin D supplements. I forgot to take one (once a week tablets) and wound up taking it 4 days late. I took the next on time, and can't remember the last time I felt this happy. I obviously have much more vitamin D than my doctor was thinking to prescribe me in my system right now.. but I want to feel like this all the time. Problem being these are 50,000iu pills. we have 10,000iu pills though. that my mother takes. and i honestly think i'm probably going to start taking those. and i'm afraid this could become some type of addiction. but i want to be happy again. like i am right now. I'm just more concerned on if this could become dangerous than anything else.. does anyone know if it's possible to OD from vitamin D?

I'm not sure if you can become addicted... it's nothing I've heard about at least. You might check in with him; see if maybe your deficiency is just that severe. Perhaps you just aren't at a normal level yet, and the extra vitamin D acted more as a loading dose than a maintenance one?

I had an experience when I had severe vitamin D deficiency. I took a tablet and immediately felt a lot better. Like, amazingly better. However, I took the same doses later and did not have the same feeling, because the good feelings were related to me getting something my body desperately craved. After I hit appropriate levels there was no extra energy or euphoria - because this was based only on the deficiency.

Vitamin D of the type taken in the US rises for three days and then falls; that's why you take the prescribed 50,000 once a week; it does not "stay" at that level. The prescription type though are only prescribed for a few months until your blood level gets normal and then you can buy less expensive 1,000 or 2,000 a day pills at the drugstore/grocery store, whatever your doctor tells you to buy. Do not take someone else's prescription or pay attention to what they are doing for their body; I don't care if it is your identical twin! :-)

Vitamin D is not addicting at all but can be dangerous (throws off the other vitamins/mineral levels that it needs to fuction well) and you may/may not feel good as you do this week, etc.; take what your doctor prescribes and learn how to get your levels to the right place safely with few side effects, etc. Work with your doctor, it can be dangerous (not from addiction) otherwise. "More" will not make you feel better. Your doctor should do blood tests periodically to check your levels (as too much can seriously injure you).

I've been taking it for a few months already, and I had my euphoria moment after my first pill, but it was there again this time because there was more vitamin D in my system than before. My number (whatever it was for) was 11. normal levels are between 30 and 100 or something like that. He already claimed I reached 'normal levels' at my last appointment. but I was still sad and depressed almost 100% of the time. when I took the pills too close to each other I had.. not a euphoria feeling.. but a mildly happy, and hyper "wow I actually feel... normal again" feeling.

As previously written, I have been on my vitamin D for a few months already. This isn't that beginning burst, it happened because I took my pills too closely together. I've already realized that the 'better' feeling wears of within a few days of taking the pill. the day taking it, and the next two days would be "ok", then things slowly got worse until the next pill, where it would start over again. I'm not taking anyone else's prescription, but we have non-prescription vitamin D at the 10,000iu level in our house in addition to my prescription 50,000iu pills.

I've heard before that vitamin D can raise calcium levels, and my calcium levels are already high (due to parathyroid problems, which is why I went to my endocrinologist in the first place). I used more than I was supposed to just now when I took my pills too close in succession, and I Do feel better now. I don't really see what you mean. My next blood test is 2 weeks from today.

I agree with Perna - you can take too much vitamin D and suffer physical affects. I suppose we can become addicted to anything, we perceive is giving us a benefit but its not an addiction like a narcotic. Usually the amount you were prescribed, should only be given for a short time and you shouldn't take multiple doses if you forget.
Vitamin D is a 'Fat Soluble Vitamin' - this means its stored in the body and not excreted in the urine like some other vitamins. It should also be taken with the main meal. Speak to your doctor, as to how long you're supposed to be on this supplement and only take it as prescribed.
