Hi,

I have gained weight, which I haven't worried about until now that I have some sobriety behind me. My main vice was not drink but pot, yet I found myself scarfing chocolate, pie, ice cream etc. without the munchies

I think it is partially the sugar high and also "rewarding" myself for not using. I know the big book talks about eating sweets, but I think that is more in exchange for the sugars in alcohol.

There are a few members in my AA group with weight problems and/or diabetes that eat large amounts of sugar even after years of sobriety. I don't want to get into the mindset that it's ok for me to be 30 lbs overweight just because I'm sober. I'm unhappy at this weight and IMO that could lead to a relapse faster than having every food I desire at my fingertips. I really want to replace the negative habits with positive habits (exercise, healthy diet, meditation etc).

The last time I sobered up for 4 years, I was at my highest weight ever and obese. I don't want that to happen again because I was miserable.

Does anyone else have a problem substituting food for drugs?

Thanks,

TnT

Hi, Thickntired. Glad you're getting along so well.

I think I'd go with three things to alter in my diet to improve overall feeling tone and health:

reduction or removal of sugar, wheat, and dairy products.

It's all related to the new information about exorphins that attach to
the opiate centers in the brain and cause addiction.

Otherwise, I'll get by without a hitch! (Those, needless to say, are things I've always craved and worked at cutting back.) That's about the best I've been able to do recently. But I keep hoping!)

Take care.
Thanks for this!

I think we can use the same "mindset" with sugar/sweets that we did with our drug of choice. Why not use the 12 Steps? Dieting never really did me any good, but I think the 12 Steps have worked better than anything.

I could get addicted to dog bones, I swear! I have SUCH an addictive personality!!! So the 12 steps are crucial to me!

Just a thought. Good luck! Hugs, Lee
