I had trouble with my last couple of sponsors, and consequently, have not used one for over a year. One of them was more concerned about the stains on my carpet, and whether my pets were fixed or not, than heling with the program; and the other one flipped out during the fifth step because she somehow thought I was attacking her religious belifes and blew up at me--we never got to finish because she was so upset at me. I've been coasting, but I really need a sponsor.

shortandcute, I no longer go to AA. I forget how long I've been sober, something like 7 1/2 years or so. I was in AA for a short time and I really struggled with sponsers. To tell you the truth we are all alcoholics and have our personal shortcomings--that makes it hard to find a good sponser. Try to find somebody who is working the steps even if they don't have a bunch of years of sobriety. I know this probably is not that much help but it's all I can think of right now......D.

I always listen for the people who make the most sense in meetings, the people who really seem to get it. Then I like to spend some time with them outside of meetings - to see if they're really living what they say. That's helped me a lot.
And even if I don't have a sponsor, I make sure I have an "A List" of people who have their stuff together I can call if I need help.

I'm also looking for a new sponsor right now. It's okay to take your time in choosing a new one, it's better to take your time then to pick one on impulse because you feel pressured to. It's your recovery, your program, it's okay to take as much time as you need to. Good luck!

My long time sponsor died. It's been grueling without him. A long time friend in the program and I sponsor each other. Unconventional, but it works for us. This has been my experience.

I have never had an easy time with sponsors. But there has been some good advice offered here. I think my favorite one by far is, before you ask them to sponsor you meet up with them a few times outside of the meeting and see what they're like out in public. Do they have road rage? Are they rude to service staff at restaurants or coffee shops? Do they litter? You'll find out pretty quickly if they're someone you could see acting in a mentoring role in your life.

I've been sober over 10yrs. Was in AA for about 2. Sponsers are a strange breed.
