My boyfriend of 5 years likes to tell me very often that I am an alcoholic, and I should not be drinking at all. His father is one and I think he just pushes that onto me. I just really don't believe that I am. I know sometimes I may drink too much...but I think that happens to a lot of people. I don't know...maybe he is right and I just don't want to believe it. It scares me.

Nobody can 'diagnose' alcoholism other than you, for yourself.
That being said, if more than one person in your life is telling you your drinking is out of control, you may want to evaluate. It could very well be that he is projecting. Growing up with a firsthand experience of alcoholism (whether having an alcoholic family member or being alcoholic one's own self) kind of skews the ability to interpret what is alcoholism and what is not. Generally, alcoholism is when drinking of any amount at any frequency interferes with your life and relationships. People always thinks it's drinking this much or being a Skid Row drunk or whatever. Not necessarily. Hopefully the book helps.

That's what I always think, that maybe because his dad is one, that he just assumes if I am similar at all that I am too. Thank you for your post! I hope the book helps too! ![]() |
