I live in fear every day. I am in a 90 day drug rehab program and the director has threatened to kick me out 3 times including today!

I received my first SSI presumptive benefit check today and she said I had to pay all my back rent which includes July, August and September at roughly $260 a month! I told her that I didn't want to pay that much money out of an $877 check and that I don't really have an income yet.

The presumptive benefit lasts only until the Social Security Administration decides whether or not to grant benefits. They could make a decision as quickly as 3 months and then BOOM! No more checks.

At any rate, she said I could not pay anything and she'll just ask me to leave. I was about to blow my top, but luckily the assistant director was there and she saved me from going bonkers. The assistant director and I negotiated that I'd pay only for August and September.

I saved some money. But at the cost of my nerves and well-being.

When I get some decent clean time I’m going to lobby the board of supervisors here in San Francisco to create a law that says rehab centers cannot kick clients out to the streets. They’ll have to find the client a shelter bed, another rehab or a detox facility.

What type of rehab is it. I mean is it reputable? I know there are some half way houses in Stockton that were pretty much a scam for getting peoples SSI checks.

Are there very good at treatment? Are they private or non profit?

I went to a 30 day private one but there is no way they would let me in if I didn't pay full price up front. Probably not unreasonable to want payments. Expensive to run one but I do not know how they operate. If they get a lot of donations they should work with low income people.

Hi,

Thanks for your questions! I just got online after a loooong Labor Day weekend.

This isn't really a tough treatment place. They have only 1 mandatory meeting every morning at 7:15 and 1 on Sunday nights. We basically create our own program by using outside services and AA meetings. A lot of us go to weekly counseling sessions with a therapist and a lot of AA meetings.

I'm going on my last month here. My discharge date is set for Oct. 5th and I'm ready to go. I don't have a place yet, but I'm working on really hard.

This is a non-profit organization. They run about 10 or 11 small rehab centers throughout San Francisco. They accepted me without having an income, but as soon as I got that check, they were all over me!
