So in the UK you can now get nalmefene prescribed to tackle mild alcoholism. I am interested in it because I drink far too much. However, the few experiences I could find online were fairly negative: dizziness, sickness and people didn't stick with it because of these side effects.

I was wondering if anyone has any experiences they could share?

Also, it is apparently available to women who drink 2 large glasses of wine a night and men who drink 3 pints of beer (I'm female and drink beer too but, whatever, that is how they have communicated the consumption levels appropriate for treatment). They say it is not for heavy alcoholics. If I drank only 2 glasses or 3 beers a night, I wouldn't think I had a problem. So my other question is what is the maximum daily alcohol consumption they would prescribe it for? I drink at night only but I really drink to excess.

Look forward to any replies

I have not heard of it. Must be similar to the one they have had in the states for a long time. I think that one makes you vomit if you drink or something. I don't think either would work for me as I would just stop taking them.

I think it is different. You can still have a drink or two, apparently, but it changes the way your brain responds to it. Drinking whilst taking it will not make you ill put you won't experience the same pleasure and so desire to continue past 1 or 2 drinks. To be honest, I don't understand it fully but I know it is being touted as an alternative to abstinence for 'mild' alcoholics.
