I am cold turkey quitting my opiates this weekend, at home. I have off of work next week and hope I can get through the worst of the withdrawal symptoms by the time I have to go back in. It's only been 24 hours but already the detox has been hell and I'm questioning why I chose to quit in the first place.

Just going wherever I can to get support and encouragement...

Hi, good luck! Any reason why you chose to go cold turkey instead of tapering? I think this is very brave of you.
Thanks for this!

It is tough. I quit drinking cold turkey but am very blessed that I did not suffer any physical withdrawal. I wish you much strength. You're doing the right thing, hang in there

Thanks. Almost through Day 2. I have struggled too much to taper before, so I'm just biting the bullet this time. Honestly for me the worst part isn't the physical withdrawal, it's the emotional one...depression, anxiety, having to face my life stone cold sober, and the thought of never being able to get high again.
Thanks for this!

Yes!! That is exactly how I felt giving up drinking. I don't miss the alcohol at all, not one bit. But getting high / drunk and having no inhibitions - I miss that sometimes. It's a devil to the brain and heart!

Keep going - you're strong.

Good luck! I'm happy you're deciding to turn your life into your own and not into your addiction's life

Have you considered maybe an outpatient addiction treatment program in your area? A lot of them will actually be able to provide you with partial hospitalization or detoxification along with their own 12 step programs, after care programs, etc.

Thanks again for the encouragement and advice. Outpatient programs would be great if there were any in my area, but I don't live close to any. As it is, I'm on Day 7, and the worst part of the physical symptoms are over. The real test will be dealing with the stress of going back to work next week...

unfortunately, as an outpatient, there is very little they can do... any meds that can help they cant prescribe outside of hospital/detox.

i got off heroin many times... with detox and without... with methadone or suboxone and without... it is a *****!

it is very different from getting off any other drug but i totally get it... it is a feeling that is impossible to explain...

but often people told me i was being brave or strong and i think i was just being self destructive... but if you can make it, good on ya...

really, outpatient programs are useless... you just need a good friend, ibuprofin, gravol, epson salts, many heaters, blankets, meal replacement drinks and a lot of strength!

it sounds like you werent too dependent... that is good... day 7 is great. withdrawal is essentially over. detox now only keeps us for 5 days! though as far as the cravings and dealing with life, that aint over...
Thanks for this!

I just stopped taking Suboxone a month ago. I had been on it for two years. I got on it to come off of Oxy in 2013. I have mixed feelings about subs bc I know that they really helped me back then, however it can become a crutch and you want them in place of the OC's. I think it's very admirable to quit cold turkey. I also stopped taking my benzos and my Paxil, all in the same week. It was hellllll and it's still been hard emotionally, a month later. Pills are so hard to stop doing but you can do it! I didn't ever think I could stop. Keep trying just literally take it one minute, one hour, one day at a time. Thinking about it like that helped me. I also tried to just lie down for awhile of the anxiety got too bad.

I knew quite a few people that tried the methadone route and only got hooked on those. I don't think it was near as difficult to stop the Suboxone as it would to quit methadone. Like I said, to each their own, but for me I knew I needed to do it cold turkey. More Meds and more docs just wouldn't have been good for me.
