Last Thursday a close acquaintance came to me and told me she quit drinking the day before. She had gone to a meeting the night before also. She was beaming with pride. She told me her plans to go to Universal, with another person who also had just quit, for the weekend.

Of course I encouraged her.
I'm surprised also, that she chose me to share this with, as she owed me nothing in the way of apologies or excuses for behavior: she'd always been fine with me.

Is this part of the AA program, or did she do this just out of friendship? Last Thursday...

If she'd only quit the day before there's no way she's to the amends of the program yet. She's probably just very proud and happy to be sober and wants to yell it from the rooftops. I know I wanted to tell everyone when I was brand new to sobriety.

I'd wait for her to talk about whether she's still sober. If she mentions that she drank, just be understanding and say well you can always try again, or something. Alcoholics, especially new to sobriety, need understanding an support, and good listeners. I'd leave it to her to set the tone of the conversation. If she's still sober, give her congrats, and if not, give her understanding. Hope she's doin well!
