Went to my first ACA meeting tonight I'm really excited to go back next week. My parents weren't alcoholic, but my dad was very verbally abusive. I really want to keep going for the six weeks that they recommend to get through the denial (and by that time I might be moving to another city).

I'm hoping that by me working on these issues for myself---I can learn to have better relationships and self-esteem in general and a better relationship with my dad.

Hi embracinglife,

So glad to hear you got to an ACA meeting. I have found them quite helpful, not always easy, but still helpful. Blessings on your journey.

Yes, I went because I have been struggling with depression for several years. I have been seeing counselors for five years to work through various issues. I started seeing a new counselor recently and she has made me think that maybe my depression is somehow related to my upbringing. My dad (who probably has an undiagnosed mental illness) was very verbally abusive to me growing up. It created a chaotic and unhealthy family sometimes. A lot of times I felt like I was walking on egg shells around him. I think it has contributed to my anxiety and depression...and I would like to work through these issues...for my own sake....and maybe to improve those relationships someday, and improve my life and happiness in general.
