So I was told a while ago that to be anorexic you have to be underweight which I understand is what most anorexics are, but I'm not underweight or even close to it. I've recently lost weight and I stay under a specific # of calories a day and I exercise if I feel ok. Would this be anorexia or an EDNOS with anorexic tendencies?

It depends on your dr. how they diagnose you. One dr. had me as EDNOS and current dr. has me as anorexic.

Medical Dr's will Dx anyone who is underweight & their blood work shows up to be anemic & who is in need of IV nutrition to be anorexic.....but that's a different DX than anorexia nervosa which is the anorexia that is defined in the DSM......in order to have the DX according to the DSM, it needs to be what is stated, otherwise, it becomes EDNOS which all ED's fall under if they don't have all the specific traits required for the specific ED.

One time even when I was extremely underweight, I didn't have all the symptoms that were necessary for the DX even when I was in treatment for it.......but a DX is not everything....the bottom line is our health regardless of the DX

Anorexia is a medical term when body goes down a certain bmi. The anorexic thoughts are there whether you are 7stone or 15 stone.

If you have those dreadful thoughts at a 'healthy' bmi you are probably anorexic. I would hope your t and pdoc can help you. Sorry I'm a bit scattered tonight

I've never heard of anemia being part of a diagnoses before. I've been clinically diagnosed with anorexia nervosa and Ed-nos. I think the main criteria is whether or not your periods have stopped for 3 months or more. The labels really have no bearing on treatment as many people are hospitalized with Ed-nos. The suffering is never related to the label you are given, that's for sure.

my primary dr. and psychiatrist have both dx'ed me with anorexia nervosa.
this was in spite of not meeting one criteria in the dsm. when i asked my primary
dr. at what point did he decide that,he said, "when you asked me if i thought you were fat."
