talking on the phone?

Maybe I am just really weird or something, but I dread talking on the phone!!!! Just thinking about it makes me all panicy!!!
I always try to talk my husband into (aka begging) making my phone calls (dr appts, etc) and if he refuses, I have been known
to put it off until the last possible minute... or just not do it at all and sometimes end majorly suffering because of it.
(For example, my mental mental appt, I put that off for like 3 weeks... until he handed me the phone one day and sat
in front of me and MADE me call)

I can't pinpoint what it is that I dread so much about talking on the phone. I mean, the logical side of me know
that the voice on the other end is a person just like me, but there is something in my head that is freaked out
by talking on the phone, and I don't know what it is. I feel like an idiot. Arrrgh!!!!

Hi Manda,
You're not weird, i am exactly the same. It does not matter how many times i've used the phone i still dread it.
I have got into financial trouble because it.
Also i don't answer the phone if i don't know who's calling me, and even if i do know i don't always answer .
I hope you don't feel so alone now,
Jen
Thanks for this!

Hi Manda I hate talking on the phone too. I hardly ever answer my phone when it rings. I hate making doc appts and things like that... and I despise having to call and order pizza!! My boyfriend and I just had this discussion, because he decided he wanted pizza for dinner and he asked me to call and place the order... I put up a stink about it... he got ticked off and asked me what the big deal was... and I couldn't really explain it. I feel like such an idiot when I'm on the phone, and get all panicky when I'm relaying information, afraid that I might omit something important, or give the wrong info. I usually write down everything I need to say beforehand when it comes to making appts.
Thanks for this!

(((((((((( Manda )))))))))))))
I have problems with talking on the phone too, in the last six months I have gotten better at making appointments but my anxiety still gets going over the phone and you are right it is so hard to explain to someone what you are going through.

Manda, I think email is the best thing ever invented because I hate hate hate talking on the phone. I'm not sure why aside from I can focus my thoughts better in writing, I never know what to say to some small talk and I hate making mistakes! I even ordered Dominoes pizza online and LOVED it. I can call for my own doctor appointments, but I'm very comfortable with medical-type stuff. However, even things dealing with reseach--which I live and breathe!--get me flustered on the phone!

Wow! I didn't know you could order pizza online. You'd think I'd have a clue since you can do just about everything online these days, LOL

Wow, good question! I also have problems talking on the phone and I am glad im not alone. I HATE IT. i would rather text or email. i very rarely pick up my phone and I NEVER do if i dont know the number. Also if it is someone i do know ill usually ignore it and text them back later (when it would be to late to call) and make up some excuse. It even affects my job. I am a recruiter and supposed to be calling people every day, but i dread it SO much that sometimes i just email instead, its really a bad thing. I also hate when my phone rings at work, sometimes ill ignore it. also really bad. i just get this fear that i wont know what to say, how to answer questions, etc.

its such a bad thing so if anyone has advice for us that would be great!!!

Oh boy do I have this one. I'm okay, sort of, to call and make appointments or order pizza, anything that is short, business and I'm familiar with. But when it come to answering the phone to someone I don't know, or calling someone or some place I don't know, or "just talking" on the phone with family or friends, I'm lost and ANXIOUS. My heart pounds, my mouth gets dry, my brain fogs up and I can't think.

I love email.

I know what you mean, it's funny, some people have double "putting their thoughts down on paper"...
well, I have BIG trouble speaking my thoughts... I would much rather write them.

I know what you mean. I hate dead air and I get paranoid that people are thinking, "God, why won't she just talk?"
It's not that I am trying to be anti-social or rude, it's just that I don't know what to say... it's like my mind is blank.

I have had this problem for about two years now. For some reason, when I am talking to someone on the phone, I have to have a clear image of that person in my mind before I say goodbye. My boyfriend laughs at me sometimes because I have to call him back a few times after we hang up! I dont know why, but it scares me to think that I wasnt thinking of that person when we said goodbye. It makes me feel as if they knew I wasnt thinking about them.

I always get nervous when having to answer a phone. I hated that part of my job more than anything I think! I don't really know why it made me so nervous, either. I even get a little wary and anxious when the phone rings, like I am expecting something to go wrong. It just feels strange talking on a phone, and I'm glad there are so many innovations with email that I could pretty much contact anyone I wanted this way.

My great gran hated the phone. She would hesitate to pick it up. Never held it to her ear, would scream at it so the other person could hear her and of course had trouble hearing them so would hang up on them.

Me I use to work both as telephonist dealing with hundreds of calls a day and as a receptionist in high fying commerical offices. After a full day, I couldn't answer my home phone or even speak on a phone outside of work.

Now with caller ID I answer the calls if I know who it is. Otherwise I let the machine pick up. Just get too anxious and frustrated by idiots.
