hey selena! welcome.
i'm wondering if anyone else here has issues with germs/fear of contracting disease. i'd also like to know if anyone has found a way to deal with this problem without meds. i know i would definitely benefit from them but they terrify me. i'm hoping to return to work soon and i'm worried i won't be able to deal with it because i have to be around a lot of people and i'm constantly afraid i'll catch something. any advice at all is welcome.

Hi! I have been diagnosed with OCD and am very new to talking about it . I would like someone to talk to as well. I started taking Paxil January 2005 and it has definitely helped me. I have always been a perfectionist and felt I was giving in to this when I began using the medicine. My husband has been very supportive of my OCD and tries to help me but I am sure he gets frustrated not totally understanding how I feel or why I continue cleaning so much! The Paxil has definitely improved my life. Don't get me wrong I constantly still have challenges. But, it was a good start. Hope this helps some, please write back.

Welcome Mcol2
![]() I too suffer from OCD. I started my meds about a year ago and it has helped me as well, although, like you, I still have my day to day struggles. If you ever need to talk, Just PM me. I am a great listener. Take care Huggles, Jen |

I'm another person with OCD here. I have pretty severe OCD, contamination fears, mostly. I wash my hands a lot, as well as other body parts, should they come in contact with something "dirty." I'm not so much afraid of contracting a disease (although it does go through my head once in a while), but I do have specific health worries. I worry about my heart, and the fact that I'm obese. I HATE being sick in general, and my OCD gets worse when I am. I try to prevent colds and flu as much as possible. My boyfriend currently has a cold, although he's getting over it. I drink a lot of orange juice when he's ill, and when I think I'm getting a cold. If I get a cold, I usually lose my appetite during the worst of it, so I'll go most of the day without eating, but I find that eating soup (chicken or otherwise, although I prefer chicken soup when I have a cold) after going hungry all day does increase my strength quite a bit. And I only started using Airborne with my last cold, which was short, so I don't know if it works as well as I've heard, or if my last cold being short was just coincidence. Nevertheless, I have Airborne ready to take at the first sign of a cold.
While my boyfriend's sick, I also use disinfectant wipes to wipe things we commonly touch, like the computer keyboard, faucets, and door handles.

I have been on zoloft for about 7 months and some things are better but other things are worse. I have been very depressed for a long time. OCD has been a part of my life for years, but the intrusive thoughts got really bad when I was about 18. I had blasphemous thoughts that bombarded my mind all day for months. It was absolute hell. OCD has affected my life significantly in the area of family and friends. Work has been a constant drama because I am always doubting whether or not I am doing the right thing and if I am not doing the right thing there will be very severe consequences for me. Decision making causes a great deal of stress and energy. I have troubles with eating and a heap of other things. It's good to know that there are other people to talk to here who know what it's like to have OCD.

Hi Karol
That would be great. I must admit though, I am not much of a conversation maker sometimes. Cat must have eaten my tongue. ![]() |

I have OCD and was diagnosed about 16 or 17 years ago. I've been on meds ever since. My OCD is kind of ticish or Tourettish. I guess you could say I'm fidgety.
I have had worry over germs and disease in the past. It sure isn't fun. Obsessive worry is terrible. I can empathize. |

Obsessive worry is hell. Did your dr ever suggest to go off medications? I am worried about that. Like what if I see improvement and get advised to go off medications and I go back to the way I was before. I'd rather stay on the medications for the rest of my life than suffer. Hope that makes sense.

it makes perfect sense and a good doctor would not ever take you off of your meds if they are helping.......i will be on meds for life for my ocd and i'm ok with that

That's good to hear. I just always seem to think of all the worst possible scenarios that might happen. Drama queen mentality.

I have OCD, too, in different forms ranging from obsessively counting things to cleaning all the time.

Hi. I get that too. Counting is so annoying. Drives me absolutely nuts. Hope to meet up with you again here.

I forgot to add that I'm a compulsive skin picker, too. I didn't know that was OCD-related until I picked up a book on OCD from the local library a few years ago.

It's nice to have you here always.
I am a skin picker too. It's so bad. I have tried to stop but it's like trying to put out a fire by chucking petrol on it. My skin is so scarred. I read that it can be a part of OCD too. I don't know if it's right but it sounds right to me. Estee |

Wow never really talked about this stuff with anyone before. You can bring up panic attacks anywhere its "socially approved" now but bring up OCD and people look at you like you have three heads..

I used to think skin picking was a form of self-injury, and, maybe in some cases, it is, but a lot of web sites and books say it's OCD. Hmm.
I was a skin picker a few years before I developed other forms of OCD, and the picking is more aggravating to me, personally, than my other OCD symptoms. I'm looking for a way to stop it for good, before I do any more damage to my skin. |
