I got hooked on xanax a few years ago and they had me on so much of it and just kept increasing it because it was becoming inaffective, I should have taken that as a warning sign but NO i didn't just kept taking it and listening/trusting the doctors. Finally weaned off ofit and went through horrendous withdrawal, now I manage my anxiety by deep breathing and positive self talk and FLAT OUT Refuse xanax if a doctor offers it to me. Anyone else experience this, what symptoms of withdrawal did u have, I dont remember mine now.

Yes, the side effects of Xanax withdrawal are notoriously horrible, sometimes almost worse than the anxiety! I had a friend that had a situation like yours and it took her forever to wean herself off. Trouble sleeping, panic, etc.

Xanax is my pdoc's most hated drug for that reason. She will only give me .5mg scripts and I'm only allowed to take it if absolutely necessary.

About 18 years ago I had a horrendous addiction to Xanax and Valium, but it was at my own hands - we're talking about a physical addiction more than a mental thing. I was trying to escape my own thoughts so took tons of pills every day. When I realized what I was doing i tried to stop cold turkey and ended up in a hospital psyche ward for detox - nonstop shaking, panicky feeling, skin crawling, sweating. Benzo detox is as bad as heroin I've been told.

Now that I've been through that I will never do it again. I go through times when I have panic attacks and need to take something. I have a PRN (as needed) Xanax prescription that I never abuse. I've had Klonipin and Ativan on occasion as well. I don't have the same need to escape and I will not go through that withdrawal again.

I've been on Xanax for like three years now, and I can't imagine being off it. If I miss a dose, within 12 hours I start shaking.

So no, I've never gone through withdrawal, but I know that I'll have to get off of it eventually.

I used to take Xanax XR--extended release--in the hopes of getting off of it entirely, but I just couldn't...
