Deb, I was that way until my 20's. I still have nightlights throughout the apartment. I also used to sleep with my glasses on...and had a baseball bat under my bed! LOL. Fear of the Dark...

I'm 18 and still fear sleeping in the dark/being in the dark if someone else is not sleeping in the room with me. I'd go as far as to check out spots someone could be hiding before I shut out the lights. Sounds paranoid, but it was just how I did things.

You're not alone. Fear of the Dark...

I am 32 and I still get spooked. I suppose it has to do with certain things in my past and I am still a scardy cat at heart. I really dont think it is an unusual thing but I know how horrible the feeling can be. Complete terror at times. If it helps you to know, I still sleep with a night light. I am not ashamed to admit it.

Hang in there.

I'm afraid of pitch-black dark where I can't see anything. I'm not afraid someone's going to get me or anything; I just panic when I don't have control over certain things, and not being able to see where I'm going or what I'm touching (which means my OCD increases this panic) makes me feel trapped.

Oh, and I'm 37.

I'm not afraid of the dark, but I can't have anything...hand, foot, etc...hanging off the side of the bed. My imagination goes wild! I've tried to make myself do it and can't!

I understand.

Hi dp, When I first moved to the country, where dark is really dark, nothing but starlight and moonlight, I rigged up a litle kerosene lamp in a bowl of sand and set it in the sink (safety first) before I went to bed.

The cabin I was in was tiny 8x12 (exterior dimensions), with a sleeping loft in the ^ of the roof. I could just sit up when I was exactly in the middle of the ^. Well, as I was 30 big years old then, I decided I was too big for a nightlight and huffed and puffed and made myself go to bed without it.
(Of course, mind you , I had three flashlights up there with me. One on the left, one on the right and one under my pillow.
Just as I went to sleep, I had a terror and popped up into a sitting position on my way to blindly bailing out...... Weelll, KaBoom, the bridge of my nose met the rafter (i was not dead cener), the impact woke me up for a flash, just long enough to realize I had just knocked myself out.

After that, I let myself have a nightlight. No big deal, no big deal at all. I realized I had other things to look at in myself that I could do something about, and turned my attention to them. Ya know? Right here, right now, do what works, ok?

I am 42 and am deathly afraid of the dark. I sleep with the bathroom light on and the nightlight on in there too because the odds of both lights blowing a bulb in the middle of the night is a rarety. Some nights I sleep with a light on in EVERY room regardless of if I am in that room or not. The worse thing on earth for me is waking up after a nightmare or even just waking up in total darkness. I also sleep with a flashlight under my pillow and before going to bed I make sure the batterys are working and strong.

I am 34 and use night lights especially after hearing my car alarm going off out side a few years back and kicking my big toe nail loose running into my bed post in a panic..
I also keep a mag lite under my bed with fresh batteries.

I keep a flashlight handy with extra batteries available, in case the lights go out during a storm or while my boyfriend's away.

Even though I'm generally ok if I can see things, I can become panicky even then, just because I suddenly feel like I have to have the light.

I sleep with the closet light on and a small lamp on in the bedroom and have a flashlight on my nightstand. I am completely okay with sleeping with the lights on. I still wake up with night terrors, but it's easier to realize and calm down when it's light than it is when it's all dark.
