i make this difference between the two occurences. panic attack is waking up with racing heart beats, terrified and shaky. or it can start when i'm awake. anxiety stays with me and it feeds into my psyche all the time...when i am experiencing it.

Both of these disorders are very similar in origin and yet different in the cause of.... a Panic Attack is a sudden surge of overwhelming fear that comes without warning and without any obvious reason.... where as an Anxiety Attack is usually connected to a particular object, thought, feeling and/ or person.

Dear maze4200,
A panic attack is an extreme fear reaction, that is usually very sudden, and lasts from minutes to several hours. A panic attack usually involves a whole-body reaction-difficulty in breathing, shaking, feeling sick and very tense. A panic attack can be helped by- slowing the breathing, purposeful relaxation, and distraction. Anxiety- is fear, excessive worry and apprehension that lasts for weeks, months or years. It is a state which is constantly on the alert and looking out for danger. Anxiety can be helped with slowing the breathing, daily relaxation, distractions, safe place visualisation, to name but a few ways to help yourself. There is also medication that can help. But if you are having a problem it is best to seek a therapist who will teach you ways of coping with this and get to the route cause of it. I hope this helps.

Another way of putting it----------
A young rabbit sees a fox in the field. The rabbit panics. The fox chases the rabbit and actually hurts it. The rabbit survives but is then constantly on the look out for anything that might look like a fox. What I am trying to say is that once the rabbit has been frightened (fear) then it will probably be anxious because of what it has been through. Our nervous system does a very good job in looking after us but sometimes it does the job too well! In my opinion there is usually a reason for the anxiety, but we don't always know why at the time. Hope this helps.
