Last Friday morning my anxiety was so OFF THE CHART that for the first time ever I thought seriously about checking myself into the hospital. In the end I managed to get things under control enough to deal with most of the day (still had to take half a day off of work). But I am wondering what would they have done at the psychiatric hospital for me? Other than pumping me full of drugs what could they have really done for me?

Basically, a hospital is for containing a crisis and preventing further harm due to a mental health crisis. It gets you out of the situation temporarily, and you get medication management (which can be done faster in the hospital than outpatient) and some support and new skills you can learn in the groups. There are some inpatient specialty programs that you might choose to go to specifically for the treatment that they can offer. Other than that, if you are able to cope outside of the hospital, and there is no danger to yourself or to someone else, you are probably best off using outpatient resources rather than checking yourself into a hospital.

what rapunzel said..altho there is always the all you can eat jello & juice bar which i live for...
seriously sometimes it is good to have a place to just go & while there there (i know that isn't worded right but you get my drift) are no worries...life is taken care of...no basic cares. you get to put your mind into sleep mode as far as responsibility...which for me was a good thing..i could get the meds i needed, get some rest (as well as jello & juice) & work on getting better) sometimes you just need a break...with no responsibility... |

Hi
Other than pumping drugs, visiting a hospital will instill a lot of self assurance, and confidence in you that will be helping you in other way to come over your anxiety. |

The experience could break up whatever negative experiences you are having. You'd have to shift your concentration, take part in new stimuluseseses (what is the plural of stimulus?).
A lot of panic (like "worry") is from the focusing on it; force yourself to change your focus and your body will often follow suite.
