Hi everyone,

So today I came up with a therapeutic method for debunking the belief that your failings make you an especially "inferior" person. I have such thoughts in situations where I perform badly, for instance when I didn't pay my parking tickets and it ended up costing me nearly $1,000 after penalties.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is the "Average Guy Method" (AGM):

Do other people with my condition have the same problem?

If so...then my failings are no worse than theirs.

If my failings are no worse
...then I am like everyone else.

If I am like everyone else...then I am no worse than other people.

If I am no worse than other people...then I am not bad.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

This method does not alleviate you from responsibility for your actions or mean that you shouldn't try to do better. There are also shades of grey where the failure could be your fault to an extent. The point is that you can't be blamed to the extent that the problem is understandable. Therefore you don't have to feel guilty or ashamed for things which make you no worse than any other fallible human being.
