I will be starting a new job with another vet clinic soon, i've already worked at one before and always had an issue with putting animals down. I didn't at my last job but this one I may have to. I just get overwhelmed with anxiety and sometimes panic since death is one of my triggers. But I can't turn the job down. Is there anyone out there with the same issue or maybe some help on how to lessen the effects? I can't take meds and would rather not, and I don't have health insurance if it gets to that point. Any ideas or suggestions?

That does sound like a very anxiety triggering job duty. Does your employer have anything similar to daily guideposts for those in your line of work who must deal with this aspect of the job?

Sounds like you'd have to work on the grief process and learn how to detach your emotions, in some way.

I wish I had some answers, really just wanted to give you a

I went to school for vet tech training and am planning on going back in the future.

the only advise I can think of would be over exposure. Eventually you see enough of it that numbs down or at least that's how it seemed to work for me when I was in school.

I am so sorry, and can understand your experience. It is very difficult. I spent many years working with animals at shelters. Only, no kill though. I then had an opportunity to work for the vet who treated our shelter animals for pay. All went ok, until one day she told me that she would be putting a dog down. The owners didn't have the money to pay. I offered to take the dog, illness and all. And was told that she had to honor the owners request. I had to leave the job. I didn't have any regrets.

I wish you well, it will be a challenge for you for sure. It takes a big heart to and gentle hands to do this much needed work.
Good luck.
warm regards,
Jade
