So I take paroxetine and alprazolam, but when I tell people what it is, they have no idea. So instead, can I just say I take Paxil and Xanax?

Yes, just educate them about brand name(manufacturers' names for their medications) and generic name(latin terms for the medicine). e.g. in the US the brand names may be different from the ones in the UK.

I agree, just say the brand name as most people won't know what your saying unless of course your talking to a doctor or pharmacist. Then I would say the generic's names.
