I don't know why, but I have a severe phobia of driving, and while I am 27 years old, I have never and feel like I will probably never have a Drivers License. In the past, when I first was practicing driving, I thought it was normal to be so scared. But then I started having severe panic attacks every time I was behind the wheel. To be honest, I don't even really like riding in the car with my Fiance, as I am constantly in fear that the cars are too close and are going to hit us. Can anyone relate? Is this a common phobia? Or if anyone else would like to share their phobias, please feel free. Thanks everyone!

Hi,

Just writing to let you know that I definitely feel for you and understand--I failed my driver's test the first time I took it due to a panic attack. I got it the second time, but only due to a very, VERY compassionate test person. I was then able to drive (albeit anxiously) for about a year and a half, but then the panic gradually got more intense. I am now 20, and haven't driven in about two years Hoping to try to face it very soon, I don't want to be stuck like this forever. I hate how people think a fear that intense is something you can just get over...

I used to have a terrible phobia of driving. I would cry and cry, think I was too anxious, so worried that I was not paying enough attention... it was pretty bad.

I've completely overcome it. I even drive on the HIGHWAY now. I never thought I'd see the day. It can be done.

I so understand this! Even though I've driven motorbikes most of my life - great for ADHD brains! - getting lost, going between lanes, behaving badly . . . but even my workplace said if I don't get a car licence, I won't get promoted, so they allowed me to go on a 2 week course... passed 2nd time.... started a new job yesterday, and stuffed the side of the trailer trying to back up,,, oh, well, I still battle with this,,, but 'getting better every day'
'Just do it' and good luck

I'm terrified of driving. Only recently got my permit which I should have gotten a few years ago. Soon I'll try actual driving but I'm very scared.

I can't drive on bridges with water underneath. I hate deep water so much and have a terrible phobia of going underwater.

I have this, and I am nearly your age. My state's vocational rehabilitation is doing drivers ed for me. Panic attacks while driving are scary so I felt this would be the safest way.

I have a lifelong fear of driving--afraid of everything to getting lost (even with gps!!) , accidents, road rage etc.

I drive locally but not highways yet. I went years not driving.

I never will drive, tried a few times and had severe panic every time. I completely understand, I tense up and screech even watching my boyfriend play grand theft auto.

I hate driving, but I will if I have to. I don't usually go more than 15-20 minutes from my house. When I was working, it would take me anyway from 45 minutes to an hour to get home and I dreaded it every day. I would get so anxious and I could not deviate from my route. One time, I completely forgot how to get home. Talk about panic!

I'm also 27, and fear I will never get a driver's license, either. I wouldn't say that I have a phobia of it - I just know that I cannot drive, as I would be a danger to myself and others, due to my anxiety, OCD, and possibly even the depression side of things. The idea of driving does scare me. I have technically driven once, on a private road, with my dad next to me (father-son thing ) and the world didn't come crashing down, but I still know that me + road = disaster. Kinda sucks, because I struggle with public transport, as well, due to anxiety and stuff.

Hi, I haven't posted anything under the anxiety section since depression is my primary concern, but I have severe anxiety about driving. I am 23 years old, I didn't get my driver's license until I was 19. I was very ashamed of myself because when I was in high school everyone was showing off all their cars and big trucks and they'd go places for lunch. There was a huge stigma of being this crappy person if you don't get your license by 16, it was horrible. Anyways, I have intense panics and fears every time I have to drive. But I live very far away from work, so I have to. I've been in a number of accidents, and I've gotten rear-ended just recently. I have terrible luck with cars, I know nothing about them (and get this: my father was a mechanic) I hate dealing with them. So yeah, I dread having to drive every time. Oh, and I also have intense fears of getting lost (even with GPS as growlycat said) thank God my car has a digital compass. Other drivers on the road make me SO nervous when I'm driving because they often tail-gate me because they just HAVE to go 20 miles over the speed limit. Now that I've been rear-ended I have a lot of paranoia about the driver who is behind me and I'm constantly checking my rear-view mirror.

I totally understand. I'm terrified of driving. I got my permit a few months before I turned 18 (and you can get them at 16, only because one night my family was making fun of me and saying things like they bet I would never even get my permit, and it was really annoying me, so I said that I was going to get it the next day (which they didn't believe), but I did, just to prove them wrong! I had it so long though that it actually expired, so I had to take the test again (I figured why not since I need a government issued ID and non-driver IDs don't give the option of turning into a license should I choose to get one). But yeah...I'm almost 23 and I have no intentions of getting a license soon.

I drive but some days are harder than others. At the same time some days are easier than others. Any day I don't need to drive is a treat!

Thank you again to everyone here who has been so brave as to share with me their fears. I hate that you all suffer similar fears, but I appreciate you all sharing, it's so nice to know that I am not the only one, although I do not wish this phobia on anyone! Stay strong everyone, and remember it doesn't matter what anyone else says, if you are not comfortable, you are not comfortable and should not force yourselves.
