I have been on klonopin 1mg three times a day (every 8-9 hours) for about a year. I keep hearing about all of the negative side effects but have yet to experience them. I haven't had a panic attack at all since starting (was having them several times a week, for seemingly no reason before starting the med). My doc seems unconcerned about negative side effects and says that I could "take it forever" if I want but he'll "detox" be off anytime I ask.

Opinions? Anyone else using klonopin regularly long term?

Hi, justaguy14, and welcome to Psych Central! I have taken Klonopin for years. One doc thinks it might be affecting my memory, but cutting down on it hasn't seemed to help much, and I take so many other drugs, so who knows? I just try to do things to help me remember, like make lists.

Have you noticed any bad side effects? Is it a concern for you? To my way of thinking, if it helps and you aren't noticing a lot of problems with taking it, then stay the course.

But let's see what other folks say......

I've been on it "as needed" for years, but I usually don't take more than 2 mg/day because more just puts me to sleep. I haven't experienced any bad side effects other than sleepiness/grogginess.

Since you're not experiencing any side effects, is there a reason you want to come off it? If you do go through with the detox, you may want to ask your doc what will happen if, after detoxing, your anxiety returns. Will it be more difficult to treat? Will you be able to restart the Klonopin? Will it need to be at a higher dose? If not Klonopin, what other medication would be available? Side effects? ...

My advice, stop listening to the negativity. If your pdoc, feels you need off, then let him order you off. If it's helping you, then what's the problem?

(from prn xanax user....i get what 'ya mean about 'hearing', all these negative side effects...oh yeah...long time prn of ambien, as well...neither of which, do i have negative side effects..)

Just ignore it, is my advice. If it helps, stick with it.
