So we got a new cat. We already had one and we got him a friend. We weighed the pros and cons and made sure we were ready for the new arrival

Thing is, any kind of change like that causes my anxiety to flare up. I don't know why. But now I'm feeling extremely anxious about this new cat and I don't want to.

Help?

Oh another thing. I've tried deep breathing to help but for some reason deep breathing causes me to cry

It sounds like the new cat is more for your cat than for you. Try to be calm and just see how it goes over the next couple of weeks. If your first cat doesn't take to the new cat, consider cat therapy or even returning the 2nd cat. I know how awful that sounds but I also know that way back when, the same thing didn't work out when I did it. My baby was bullied, starved, and miserable. After a few months I had to return the 2nd cat, much to my dismay, but my baby perked right up and lived a long and happy life.

Thank you for adopting another fur baby. I love cats but I can't own them because I'm allergic I'm sorry you're having a hard time with this. Maybe just focus on how cute your new cat is, will help take the anxiety off. This anxiety will ease and go away over time and soon that anxiety will turn into love for the new cat. Just give it some time. New changes are often stressful.

The key thing is don't rush cat introductions. Keep them in separate rooms so that they can smell each other from under the door. Then after 3 days or so, do a short supervised intro but you should probably have the existing one in her carrier so she cannot attack the new cat. Then retreat and repeat in a few hours until you can let the one inside her carrier out. Always supervise for a few days when they are in the room together - NEVER leave them alone.

Worse case scenario is they just never become sleeping buds but don't do a return to a shelter please. If it absolutely doesn't work out, try to find a good home instead of sending the new one back at the animal pound/shelter. If you are patient, it should work out.

Can you elaborate on what about the new cat makes you anxious?
