I have been issues with gas and bloating for a while now and my gastroenterologist wants to do a upper GI endoscopy and colonoscopy which requires sedation I have great fears about this because I have severe obstructive sleep apnea and I am wondering about the safety of these procedures for people like me any help and advice would be great<br/>
Also wondering if my lifelong anxiety has given me IBS or if I'm creating these problems as they started right around the time my wife told me she was pregnant with her third child and 35 years old I live is it taken as a little bit of valium over the last few years when the attacks come but I think I need to get some more regular medicine (non narcotic) I will probably do these procedures but I am very nervous about them. Are the upper GI endoscopy and colonoscopy safe? Soo worried Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk |

Did you mention your concerns to you doctor? Since you are really concerned about your sleep apnea ask if you can have the endoscopy done with an anesthesiologist present. Not all endoscopy clinics have one on staff so make a request to get it done where one is present.
Anxiety can definitely affect the stomach and bowel. My nerves can give me bad indigestion. I don't know it causes IBS though. Endoscopy is generally safe. There are a few small risks such as perforation. I know some of the panic you are going through because I'm having a colonoscopy in December. The bowel prep terrifies me.

Some GIs are so willing to do endoscopy for any problem. Blood tests and x-rays don't always reveal inflammation. For example a person with Crohn's may have a normal ESR during a flareup. Endoscopy allows the GI to see minor inflammation such as redness that wouldn't be seen on an x-ray. Most cases of IBS can be diagnosed without endoscopy. History and the absence of 'red flag symptoms' are often enough. If I had IBS I would never do the test.
