Hello,
I know that anxiety + alcohol is a path to addiction. I'm definitely not addicted. In fact, I don't really enjoy alcohol much except maybe some wine every now and then. The reason I'm bringing this up is that I feel that my anxiety is diminished quite a bit when I have some wine, and I feel like I can function again and move on with my life. I know that part of it can be a false feeling because the alcohol removes some of the fear. I'm not on any meds right now. My question is since the alcohol has this kind of effect on me, is it possible that a medication could help also. I know meds are not alcohol, but maybe it's something I should consider? I've been seeing a psychologist, but he doesn't seem to believe in meds. Thanks, - stuck |

I am on meds that help a lot with the anxiety and also my depression. However, I enjoy a bit of wine sometimes and it does help me relax. I think meds are definitely something you should consider, though.

I have used alcohol to control emotional pain and physical pain. I have worked 12 step program but as family of an alcoholic and I'd say most alcoholics are self medicating; some underlying mental and some physical illness. A psychologist 99% of the time cannot prescribe so you may want to just consult with a psychiatrist who can. Good luck!
