Suffer from obsessive compulsive anxiety and irrational thoughts. I know these are just fears and not things that are actually going to happen but it is crippling. I have been on lexapro 20mg for 10 weeks now and. 5mg of xanax as needed. I try not to take the xanax. It was getting better. I felt solid at about the 7week mark. I suffered the loss of a grandparent 2 weeks ago and the anxiety and thoughts and fears are back. I thought with the meds this wouldn't happen. Am I not on the right meds? Has this happened to anyone else?

hi nygirl
i express my sympathies at the loss of your grandparent. you should discuss what is happening med wise with your doctor but i can tell you something similar that happened to me that may explain it. my meds (for another condition) were working fine. then i had a big stressor to my system (like the death of your grandparent). so this flooded my brain, which was balanced with the meds i was on, with all kinds of distress chemicals. so the meds i was on were not able to handle the overload, and i began experiencing symptoms again. after more meds were added to handle the overload, things balanced out and i got better again. i hope that makes sense. welcome to psych central. you will find we have several forums where you can post about your concerns and receive feedback from other members. you will get a lot of support here. again, welcome ![]() |

Meds can't help grief. It can help with some of the symptoms, but it sounds like you are suffering more from grief and shock. Maybe you should talk to your doctor and find out if maybe an adjustment to your meds might help.

Thank you Kaliopi. His death was a blessing. I know that. No quality of life. He wanted to go. I just thought I was good. I have xanax that I take as a helper when needed and I have been in contact with my therapist. It helps so much to talk so I decided to join this forum.
