Hi all,

I have GAD and everyday is difficult to get through. I am prescribed Valium and Xanax, but I think they are not working as good as they did at first. I think my tolerance has built up and I'm not getting the relief I need. I'm also on Pristiq, but I think that works more on my depression that it does my anxiety.

My question to all of you is do you know of any medications for anxiety that don't cause weight gain? I was on Paxil and I loved it. The only problem was it made me gain 40 lbs. I'm off of it now and kind of wondering if there is anything else that works, but doesn't pack on the lbs. Please don't recommend any benzos as I don't want to use those anymore.

Thanks for reading. Any replies are appreciated!

Wellbutrin does not cause weight gain and I see you are already on that. Maybe a dose increase would be helpful. Max dose of Wellbutrin XL is 300mg daily.

Maybe you already are doing some other therapies, but if not consider taking up one of the many things known to improve mood such as exercise, relaxation, music, yoga, etc. I do jewelry making and other arts/crafts ... never fails to relax me.

In my experience of being on many, many meds they all cause weight gain. For one thing, psych meds cause sugar cravings.
Thanks for this!

Thanks for responding. I had actually had in mind to ask my pdoc to increase my Wellbutrin dose to 300. I really don't want him to start me on a whole new med. I mean, unless it is a wonder drug or something. But otherwise I'd rather up what I'm already on.

I'll try some of the things that you suggested. Thanks!

I'm on paxil and I love it. I haven't gained any weight but I try to eat healthy and avoid sugar.
,
Beta blockers are really good for the physical signs of anxiety, like panic attacks, trembling, shaking etc.
Thanks for this!

I'm glad that Paxil is working for you. It did relieve my anxiety a whole lot. But I was only eating about 500 cals a day while I was on it and it still made me gain.

Thanks for the advice about Beta blockers. I'll bring it up to my pdoc next appointment.
