My 20 yr. old college son was diagnosed with social anxiety. Just wondering if that is really what it is...
He doesn't associate with anyone at college, chose to live alone in an apartment after having a bad roommate situation his freshman year. Walks with his head down going to and from classes. Does not have a job, says he can't because he is a fulltime student and goes through out the year. Refuses to go out to eat with the family. Would not even eat dinner with us for Easter-stayed in his room until everyone left. Does nothing with his girlfriends family ever. Only hangs out with 2 friends that smoke weed like he does from home. Suffers from anxiety and depression. Had been turning to alcohol but seems like he is trying to cut back on that. Smokes weed though. |

Self medicating is a trap. Not sure how to get out of that. You can't tell 20 year old people what to do. Was he given meds as part of his diagnosis? Does he take them?
What about a therapist? That can be an anchor to reality and a lifeline.

He had tried therapy last year but quit after 2 times. He started up again last week. The therapist faxed his family doc a suggestion for a different anxiety med (zoloft) because the family doc had him on only 10 m g of lexapro. It was not working. However, the family doc. knows his history of binge drinking and didn't write the prescription of zoloft yet until he talks to the therapist. Not sure what is going to happen now.

The doctor may be concerned about self medicating with alcohol or marijuana and the interactions with the meds.
Erring on the side of caution. You situation is difficult like trying to push cooked spaghetti.
