So I've decided that I'm not cut out to live away from home yet...I'm fine in classes cut when km in my room I get really anxious and homesick...I don't think it's just because I'm a freshman, I think it's because I'm never away from home for very long...anxiety? Or something else?

Hello there!
I feel for you! I am very attached to my home, and family. I imagine this is because a lot of my anxiety is centered around my family. How long have you been living away from home? If it's only been a few nights, trust me it will get better. The first week ish is always the worst. __________________ [FONT="Times New Roman"] Dx: Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction, Irritable Bowel Syndrome - Alternating, Mild Social Anxiety Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder - PI Rx: Vyvanse 30mg, Propranolol 10mg PRN, Amitriptyline 25mg PRN Previous Rx: Lots of Amoxicillin, Alprazolam, Ibuprofen 200mg

Hi Stormie, I'm sorry to hear you're having such a rough time. Especially since I experienced much of the same feelings when I started college. The interesting part is that my anxiety was worse when I went to class and going back to my dorm made me feel better. Regardless, I know the feelings of anxiousness and homesickness.
These first weeks are the hardest. I jokingly reminisce that I had the freshman -15 because I lost a significant amount of weight in my first month of college due to my anxiety (and possibly our terrible dorm food...). I can say that it gets better, and you are certainly not the only one who feels this homesick. Try to stick it out and if you can, look into your school's counseling resources. At first, I felt ashamed when I decided it was time for me to see a counselor at school, but it helped so much to talk to someone about how I was feeling, and I realized that there is nothing wrong with admitting you'd like help. In fact, I later learned that a lot of people I knew went to the counseling center for various reasons. College is a stressful time. There are lots of changes, but in my opinion it was worth sticking it out because it's also one of the most fun times of your life! (Even if it doesn't feel that way right now) Good luck, I'm wishing you nothing but the best |

Hi Stormie
I was just wondering whether there are any courses at a college within traveling distance of where you live? Perhaps that would work better for you. A lot of courses can be taken online these days also. Take care. God bless and best wishes from your friend Francis |

aww, i feel for your situation. i was much the same. except that i went way too far away from home that first year of college (1500 miles!) at least you didn't do that, from how it sounds. i hope you will give yourself a big hug, try to be proud of yourself for giving it a try. and yes, i agree, some of us are just not cut out for the college life and living in the dorms. goodness knows i wasn't. transferred four times and ended up at a school 15 minutes from my parents' house when i graduated. tried being away at two different schools. came home both times.
i hope your family will be supportive about your decision if you decide to go home. that makes it a lot easier. that said, maybe you will find that as some time goes by you will connect with some more people there? i have been in your shoes and i wish you all the best no matter what you decide to do. __________________ |

Stick it out Stormie Lee, it gets better, especially if you spend a lot of time in the student union bar playing three card brag, pool and subuteo (I know of what I speak).
There are lots of other people like you feeling uncomfortable but loving at least part of it. You will find them or they will find you, whatever. If you can find a boyfriend or girlfriend or both (delete as appropriate) so much the better, but don't worry if you cannot just yet (plenty of time for that nonsense ideally after your fortieth birthday), and if you do don't get in too deep, unless you really must of course. |
