Hello. I was wondering the difference between social anxiety and agoraphobia. I know that they each have a different criteria and that for social anxiety wise, it would seem to me most people with social anxiety would for the criteria for agoraphobia. I hate crowds, can't stand them, and I won't used public transportation unless I have to. Too many people. When I am in crowds or buses or what not, I am afraid of getting a panic attack from my social anxiety. This is how I also feel about performances. Panic attack = being judged = embarrassing. Social anxiety at its finest. I am more afraid of the panic attack performing musical wise, but during a presentation, I am more afraid of the people judging me. Would these be two different things or the same thing? I have not mentioned this to pdoc because I am not sure about it. I think it's social anxiety, but social anxiety isn't the fear of panic attacks. Half the time presenting I am afraid of panic attacks, and being judged of course. I don't fear panic attacks in crowds though. Just being judged. Any thoughts on this? Thanks for your help Agoraphobia vs social anxiety .

Most people mistake agoraphobia for being a fear of people when it really means a fear of being in an undesirable situation without a means to escape; agoraphobia doesn't always directly pertain to people.

With that being said, I fit the bill for having agoraphobia much more than social anxiety because I can usually function just fine in social settings as long as I either have control of the conversation or I have a means of escape if I begin to feel trapped.

I think some people do get embarrassed by public panic attacks, so they withdraw from getting outside. But certainly fear of being judged can keep us away from folks. I am working on my self-esteem, so I won't care as much about what people think. Have you considered some therapy for that?

I fear no escape when I am performing. I can't escape without pure embarrassment so.

Also, I know it doesn't, but you only need the criteria of 2, and two of them contain people so.... yep.

hi Nike

Agoraphobia is really fear of leaving the house and being in open spaces and getting a panic attack there. As you can leave the house. I don't think you have agoraphobia. Social anxiety is more getting anxious about having to relate to other people in finding things to say to them.

But there is no reason to suppose that people are judging you, because we don't know what other people are thinking. so we can't assume that they are judging us. Most often they are totally wrapped up in their own affairs and not thinking about us at all. I hope and pray all of this does improve for you in the future. God bless and best wishes from your friend Francis
Thanks for this!
