For a good while in my life, I had been fearless in the things that I would do. Now that I'm older, I feel silly anxiety over things. And now I feel anxiety when I exercise at things that I love to do. It takes the fun and joy out of it!
When I workout with the weights, I have fears that I'm going to get injured. It has happened, but I recovered. Sometimes I get the feeling that the fear and anxiety in itself can cause me to get hurt. And then, mostly, I get anxiety when I go out on my bike. I guess that I would prefer bike riding over weightlifting. I fear mostly of getting a flat tire, especially the rear tire. For me it seems very complicated to put the rear wheel back on; having to deal with the chains and gears. And it's very messy to have to do that. And a real hassle to have to do it on the road. I've known guys who were avid bike riders and they had quit because of having to fix flat tires. I would hate for me to have to give it up because of that. The guys who had quit had gained weight when they stopped bike riding. I have cut my bike riding distance short because of the fears I have. And I have gained a little bit of weight. Has anyone else experience this? This is my first time posting on the Anxiety board. I have been a regular on the Depression board. |

I get anxiety while exercising as well. I like to walk three miles every morning and am consumed with fear the entire walk. I'm terrified of dogs and am afraid I'll be attacked by one or that people are staring at me. I walk in the early morning because I have a sunburn phobia as well. I have to pick and choose which yoga classes I go to because of the awkward social situations. My anxiety has taken so much from me but I refuse to let it take my fitness as well. I fight my anxiety constantly.

I haven't had this exact phobia but I think we all have fears that something is going to go wrong - exercise, tests, work meetings, public speaking . . . I think it's good your reaching out for help. Sometimes, I've found my fears are actually based in reality. I'm avoiding something because I don't know how to handle it. If you're afraid of changing a flat I would practice it at home (mess and all). If you think this is over the top fear, then I might work on ignoring the fear, rationalizing it away, or questioning how realistic it is. Good luck. Bike riding is great. I hope you keep getting some kind of exercise.

I also have a tremendous fear of walking my daughter in her stroller around my neighborhood. I am terrified that someone will try to hurt me to get to my daughter. These fears have kept me in my home. It's truly awful. I have always suffered from anxiety, but it's gotten so much worse since I had my daughter. I worry constantly about someone hurting her. It's not healthy.
