Cried again at the dentist today, 2nd time I've made a scene there in 2 weeks. I'm just feeling lousy about it because I'm a grown-*** woman. They are really nice and know about my history with anxiety/depression & traumatic experiences that were created by bad dentists, but it still didn't stop the waterworks from coming when she tried to put the tweezers in my mouth to remove a temporary crown. I was really embarrassed. They gave me a few minutes and then I said she could come back because I really needed to get this done and I figured the numbing would wear off if I waited too long anyway. She gently suggested afterward to talk to my pdoc about getting some different anti-anxiety meds that I can use for procedures. I can't stand those damn tools coming at me. They told me I wasn't the only adult who cries in there, though.

Rather than beating yourself up, maybe say 'so what' if you feel anxious at the dentist? It is so unnatural to have someone putting instruments in one's mouth, who could possibly enjoy it? And you feel confined to the chair all the while. I liken it to having a pap smear or mammogram or colonoscopy or shots, etc, etc. Yikes! No one likes any of those either.

I was just at the dentist for a cleaning and while I love my hygenist, there are many places I would rather be :-)) I was shaky so I asked her to get me a cup of cold water to sip on (when I could) and that helped me feel a bit in control.

Your fear of the dentist does not make you a bad person. Just someone who is having a natural reaction to an unnatural experience - poking and prodding!! You got through it - give yourself kudos and maybe a treat for doing it.

I have severe dental phobia. I go to a dentist that specializes in dealing with this. For the initial exam, he requested that I come un-medicated. I started panicking as soon as he asked me to open my mouth. Even the mirror freaks me out. I started crying, but was trying to be brave. Then I felt like I couldn't get enough air, which led to sobbing and shuddering. I was not in any physical pain. He was just doing an initial exam and x-rays. He prescribed a very strong short acting sedative for future visits. I have taken this twice (1/2 dosage) for two, six month cleanings. He also lets me zone out with music.

Just wanted to let you know that you are not alone.

I have dental anxiety too. I can't have a bite guard in my mouth and when they need to do XRAYS in my mouth they use a child's size film thing. I freaked out so bad on a dental assist one time at my first visit at a new dentist office that I thought for sure they were going to kick me out and close my chart right away but no instead I had a very understanding dental staff around me who no matter what demand I had they honored it and it turned out to be a great experience. I even wrote them a very nice review on their website afterwards. I also have a fear of surgical mask and a few dentist have offered not to wear them if it causes anxiety for me. I tell them no every time and just lay back in the chair and try to fall asleep.

Had to go in for an emergency 2 weeks ago because I woke up in excruciating pain from a tooth that turned out to be severely infected. I hope everything went well for you today.

It's my uncontrollable crying I can't stand. I don't think crying is a bad thing, I just don't like losing it in front of other people, especially strangers. But that's my problem. Thanks.

It sounds like crying is triggered like a reflex to that anxiety. I had heard that changing your facial expressions as your face muscles start to contract for crying to a more neutral face can stop it. I did a search and found this article that might be helpful to you: 4 Ways to Stop Yourself from Crying - wikiHow

@ with or without you, I love watching the tools! I sit there in the chair and watch in amusement, as best I can, the huge dental syringe go into my gums the anesthetic getting injected. It amuses my dentist because I don't even flinch, even when I got a total of 9 injections in my gum in the last visit. Obviously I can't see it going into my gums but I can see it sticking out of my mouth and in her hand as she slowly injects the lidocaine. I like to see all the little tools she uses too. :P Sorry if I am freaking you out!

Keeping your eyes closed does help! I used to have dentist anxiety and that was my best fight against it back then

Don't feel bad, I can't stand going to the dentist, I put it off as long as possible. I start shaking when they.come toward me with a needle or tool, even the brush, having people leaning over me while I'm leaning back makes me extremely nervous. I'm also embarrassed because my teeth aren't in great shape from years of drinking soda and sometimes going through bad hygiene phases when I'm depressed and skip brushing you're not alone that's for sure

I can't tell if your first paragraph was sarcasm or not, but if it wasn't, you're being quite unhelpful.

with or without you,

That post was scary.

I think Finniky was trying to show the opposite of dental anxiety. I believe no harm intended.
