Yes I take klonopin. But my doctor doesn't want me on a benzo for very long. He just out me on klonopin to stabilize my many and frequent panic attacks which it did. Now he wants to switch me to an SSRI that will help with anxiety and be better for the long term.

My main concern is it ok to be taking an SSRI and lithium at the same time? General consensus is yes. But there is a warning against these drugs and possible serotonin syndrome so I'm apprehensive.

I'm the same way. Gabapentin helps quite a bit.

Gabapentin was a nightmare drug for me. It exacerbated my anxiety and panic and was just terrible. It actually lead me to the hospital. Just goes to show everyone is different and reacts different to drugs. I am trying to get off klonopin and don't want another benzo so xanax is out. Looks like we got one vote for Zoloft though but you didn't vote.

I was on Prozac and it seemed to have least harmful effect for me. I weaned off of it this summer. I am trying to get to med free. This last week has been a major setback thou

Seeing my pdoc this Monday. Will see what he says. He listed Prozac, Zoloft, and Lexapro as his top three.

Even though I am BP, lexapro is one AD I can take and Its helped me a lot in the past. However the last time I went on it, I lost sexual function and had to stop taking it. But not all people get that. I tried Zoloft back in my early DX and it made me very mean. Prozac put me out all day everyday

Lexapro takes the "edge" off, but doesn't completely take away my anxiety.

Everyone reacts differently to different medications. It's hard to pick a "best" when it's really going to vary greatly from person to person.

I use a benzodiazepine for panic attacks.
Thanks for this!

I have only ever tried zoloft (sertraline) and ativan (lorazepam).

I started zoloft originally 3 years ago for a short time, went off and on it, just got back on this week after a bad panic attack + anxiety ridden 5 days! it has some annoying side effects, especially right now (it is making me more anxious, no appetite, and irritating my GERD) but once it kicks in, I ruminate less, am generally more stable, and have very reduced health anxiety.

I got prescribed the lorazepam after an ER visit this spring when I had a fast heart rate and was super anxious. I took it a few times to chill out, then decided I needed to stop but saved it for emergencies. well, this past week i took a dose each night before bed (1mg) 4 nights in a row because of the nightly panic attacks. I am kinda upset I did this and am afraid I got dependent, but i'm not taking it the last few days. It knocks me out which is great but I do not want to become dependent or tolerant!

Well every drug has a different reaction for everyone! We are all unique and have different brain chemistries so Zoloft may work for me but it may not work for you.

As for me I've had a lot of success with Zoloft but only temporarily -- seems medication cannot fix what is broken but will only help mend it for the time being. I was on Zoloft from age 16-19 starting at half a 50 up to 100 and eventually had to try to find other medications. Unfortunately nothing worked as well as Zoloft did for me and so I've been off of medication for 4 years now and am currently looking to start up on a new script as soon as I can find the proper doctor. Along with Zoloft I was given Xanax for panic attacks. Unfortunately this prescription from my pediatrician and she gave me 90 .5 alprazolam a month at the age of 16. Needless to say I don't remember much but it helped with the jitters I got from Zoloft. Overall the couple worked well when not taking Xanax daily and only for attacks.

Past Medications:
Zoloft (Sertraline) , Wellbutrin (Buproprion), Remeron (Mirtazapine), Abilify (aripiprazole), Xanax (alprazolam), Ativan (lorazepam) ...phew that's all I can remember!

Well I just saw my pdoc today and he prescribed me Lexapro 5mg to go with my cocktail of Lithium 1200, Seroquel 200 (an night) and Klonopin .25 x 2 daily. I really hope it reduces my anxiety. I already take klonopin for my panic attacks but still get evening anxiety. We decided on Lexapro together to combat my anxiety because I'm trying to get off the klonopin eventually. Anyone have experience taking Lexapro? How did it work for you and what should I watch out for? He said to watch for fast speech, hypo mania, problems sleeping, and irritability. Hope this works. And also hope it doesn't give me nausea.

Lexapro is probably one out of two ADs I can take because I'm BP and yes it helped me but 5mg wouldn't do anything for me. I think I started at ten and went up to 20. The only reason I stopped taking it is because it gave me sexual side effects.

I'm very sensitive to meds so he is probably starting me at a low dose for that reason. Also like I said I'm on lithium so he probably just wants to be careful.

A few hours later and I feel better. Still have a little bit blurry vision and feel a little out of it but I feel better. Amazing I could feel side effects from the first dose!

Pdoc told me to quit taking Lexapro today. Second day with pretty bad side effects. Anxiety/panic and feeling weak and pain in my chest, depersonalization/derealization... Just feeling extremely uncomfortable and weird. He told me to quit taking it. I'm feel slightly better now but for a minute there I was about to go to the ER. I am so sensitive to meds. Ugh.
