I was on western meds for 13 for bipolar 2 until the side-effects were too much to take. I went off them, and started using amino acids and the mineral lithium orotate to control my bipolar 2. Because the amino acids are used by the brain to produce fresh neurotransmitters, I do remarkably well. I do have my share of anxiety that is controlled by them as well.

A good resource is book Heal with Amino Acids by Billie Sahley PhD that you can order from the painandstress.com web site. It's a very helpful book that covers how to use amino acids for a host of physical and mental health issues. She has a few others books as well that are very good. I don't buy my amino acids from her. I order them from Vitacost.com and use their amino acids, and have done very well on them.

The great thing about using amino acids to control both bipolar and anxiety is that if my mood or anxiety shifts or increases, I just take whatever amino acid or lithium orotate to bring my mood back where it should be. I was on meds for 13 years, and have been using amino acids for 9 years, and can honestly say I'm doing far, far better on the amino acids than I did on the meds. The only side-effect I've had is that one of the amino [DLPA] raises my blood pressure about 10 points, but it's still within the normal range. Other than that, I haven't had any issues with them, and I'm not tied to a Pdoc controlling my life.

I take some vitamin supplements in addition to medication. I have also had relief using aromatherapy.
