Ive been taking 20mg prozac for 15 days, and my anxiety is through the roof. My thinking is completely distorted and impaired. I'm nervous and scared all the time. I mean i've had anxiety for some time now but its never been this bad. I've read that prozac can do this in the initial 4 weeks but after that these side effects subside and it starts to get better. Any suggestions?

Hello Ravdeep Singh: I'm sorry you are experiencing this difficulty. I don't know as I have any particularly useful suggestions for you. From my perspective, I would think the best thing to do would be to check back with your prescribing doctor.
Thanks for this!

You need to get off prozac if you don't want this to be the new normal in your life. And yes, anxiety is a side-effect of all psych meds because they block the body's ability to utilize magnesium that keeps the body and mind relaxed.

Anxiety is not a side effect of all psych meds. Many psych meds calm anxiety.

I didnt take it today. My head feels lighter. Anxiety has dialed back to a somewhat manageable level. All the fears are still there but the urgency of the impending fears has slowed down. The option for turning to doctors is always there, but im exhausted from being disappointed over and over from most of the drugs ive tried. i'm gonna take a few days off, and see it how things are. and i agree Laura Beth, not all drugs are bad. Im bipolar 2 and also have seasonal affective disorder and the mood stabilizer im taking is working great for me. so im grateful for that.

I am also bipolar. Some SSRI's increase my anxiety. I'm currently on Zoloft, so what I had to do was increase the dose very slowly and patiently. I'm so glad the mood stabilizer you are on is working well for you. May I ask which mood stabilizer it is?
Thanks for this!

Yeah, little victories, i'll take what i can get for now. i'm taking Trileptal 300 mg as a Moods stabilizer. No side effects whatsoever. As for the SSRI's, ive tried Paxil and Prozac, and the whole experience has been a nightmare. I'm starting to think that maybe i'm particularly sensitive to ssri's. Coz ive taken SNRI's in the past and they've all been pleasant, for the most part. This time when i go see my doc im thinking about asking him to put me on venlafaxine or cymbalta.

It sounds like an SNRI might be a better way to go for you.

I just started taking Trileptal a few weeks ago and, so far, I am very pleased with it. No side effects for me, either.

I love what you said about feeding anxiety, that if we look hard enough there are always "opinions" ( thats what they are, just opinions, but they try to pass them of as facts) that we can find to feed our anxiety and make it worse. Its very insightful and so true. Its very helpful. Thanks for sharing that.
