Hi all,

So I had my first major anxiety attack this weekend followed by another one last night. Resulting in pretty much no sleep. I was prescribed Xanax and this is my first time taking any medication for anxiety. I’m so scared I’m not going to sleep again tonight as I have to go back to work tomorrow.

Has anyone else had anxiety attacks that start in your sleep? If so, how do you deal?

Thanks!
Hugs from:

First off I am really sorry. I have had anxiety attacks and nightmares frequently at night and I think the way that I handle it might be different then the way you might handle it. I am only 16 years old and every time I have one my mom usually sits with me until I am calm enough to go back to bed. Sometimes she even sleeps in the bed with me for the night. We talk about the nightmare or even flashback that may have brought on the anxiety and I even do deep breathing and also write in my journal as well. It is really the comfort of my parents though that helps me through. I don't know your living situation so I don't know if you have anyone available for that comfort. Good Luck and big hugs.
Thanks for this!

Hi, I have been getting them most of my life. Hopefully you wont have the same experience. I had one last night and I take the Xanax and when it starts to work, that "I cant breathe" feeling gets lighter and goes away. try to stay up watching tv or reading before you go to sleep, follow your normal routine. Don't think about it, keep your brain occupied.

Good Luck
Thanks for this!

Thank you to everyone that has replied. I'm going to see a doctor next week and I cannot wait. This is the first time I have been excited to see a doctor, lol! I just hope we can figure out exactly what is going on and I can feel more like myself.

So I saw the doctor and he put me on Zoloft after being on Xanax temporarily. It has not been easy. My first three days have been dealing with side effects including headaches, feeling like my whole body is on fire, nausea, anxiety, lightheadedness, and insomnia. However, today is the fourth day and I am finally feeling normal for a few hours. Hopefully that means my body is getting used to it, as the side effects feel pretty bad when I have them.

Here's to hoping I will get through them quickly!
