Is there any way that you can avoid anxiety attacks. I hate them beccause i get a really sick feeling, my heart races, i feel wightless, and i just want to surl up and go to sleep or i pass out. I can't take any medication for any of my conditions so therapy on here helps but thats about it. If you guys know any tips please share.

Thanks'

Well, I got put on Zoloft and I think that helped. And for immediate relief there are always tranquilizers, thought the can be habit forming.

I'm learning how to decrease the intensity & how often they occur through tools learned in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. I posted some contact info. if you want more info. about it on the post "anxiety." I used to be paralyzed by them, feel "unreal" & have horrible chest pains (doc checked out heart--that is fine--just anxiety). I do take Klonopin at night, but don't want to take anything during the day as it makes me tired.--Suzy

Hi,
My T recently gave me a technique to gain control of my anxiety(i refuse to take medications, but because I am anxious most days of the week this technique may not be enough). What you do is when you feel the physical symptoms of anxiety starting take slow deep breaths. Inhale and then exhale to a count of 8(this number varies though). Eventually this will slow down the body's reactions to anxiety and slow your mind down too. Do this until you feel everything slow down. I hope this helps

I found that the more I try to avoid anxiety attacks, the more often and intense they become. CBT has helped reduce the frequency and intensity.
Good luck they are yucky.

I have heard therapy works well, medication (not a choice for you) works ok.

when im home and feel anxiety i pick up my guitar and start playing, helps calm/distract me. sometimes just doing anything you enjoy and right away can distract you enough from havin a full blown attack. at work i just start doing anything, i may stop whatever im doing and start something completely different. thats not easy for everyone, i have job where im the boss so maybe thats not very helpful. but try doing something to distract yourself. theres triggers that bring anxiety on but the more you get it youll start finding trigers to help calm them down and hopefully make them stop. panic/anxiety attacks are kinda new for me and they came on strong, but i am determined to make them stop. i will post anything else i find that helps stop them.

My first AA was last year when I was in the 9th grade. I was cleaning the kitchen and I felt like I needed to pour bleach alover everything (I also have OCD). I got this weird over-powering rush of nervousness, my heart was racing, I felt dizzy and on top of that I was shacking. It was a feeling that I never want to feel agian. But later this year It started agian over multiple of things caused by my OCD. I would want to get therapy but whenever I tell my mom about it she just ignores me or she says something like 'does this or that bother you' and then act like I never asked the question.

First, thanks for asking the question and for all the answers, I am always looking for new things to do. I don't know if there is anyway to "avoid" them but after suffering with them for a long time I have learned a few techniques to calm them and sometimes not allow the panic to take over.

One of the techniques is to pretend like they are another part of myself and give them a voice so I can talk back to them. However inane it sounds and whatever you need to say to them it has helped me learn why they are there and for me to talk back.

Doing anything in the moment to distract myself, whether that means singing loudly in my car to music or running in place. I know for me it feels like they are lasting a life time when they come on but it is really only a short time and if I can get through that, it's a big deal.

What I am really learning is on a daily basis I need to sit and do some sort of meditation whether it is reading, listening to music or walking with focus. Something to learn how to live my life differently so I have some sort of dealing mechanisms when I get them.
