I like theatre and was always curious about the actual process involved in making a play and performing it but my social anxiety always prevented me from trying to get involved in amateur stuff.
Well, last summer, I had the luckiest moment in my entire life and ended up not only meeting my favorite actor but actually spending some time at his home with his wife, who is an amazing person involved in theatre herself. Anyway, meeting those people, seeing first hand how this favorite actor of mine is this rather introverted person who is quite uncomfortable being in the center of any attention and so on, managed to give me a push and enough courage to take some amateur acting classes. Yesterday, my class had the first performance of a play, on an actual theatre stage, with an audience. I was so nervous and I did take half a Xanax but I managed to go out there and say my lines and actually do ok. I was afraid I would not be able to go on stage or that I would go and forget everything, but it went well and that was one of the few victories I have had against my social anxiety. Actually, I would recommend amateur acting classes to everyone, they can help with social anxiety and with how you present yourself to others, with trusting and being more vulnerable in front of other people. Plus, if you do a play, that requires camaraderie and trust so you may end up making friends. |
