Hi. I am an 18 year old female from Pennsylvania. I was referred here by a friend, saying that I should take the ADHD "quiz" to see if I have it. The reason she told me to take it was because I have been suffering from [something] lately, and by lately I mean the past couple of years. I find myself unable to focus on a single task [even those which I enjoy most in life] for more than like ten minutes. This becomes a problem being a college student. Just yesterday, I forced myself to spend two hours studying for a quiz, and when I was done studying, I had [and still have] no idea what I read. When asked to read anything, or when I pick up a book that looks interesting, I just stare at the words and don't interpret them. I know very well that I can read, and I can pick up that good book and read it for 10-20 minutes, but then I just lose focus and though I may finish 30 more pages, I have to reread them because I don't know what a word of it said. My grades are suffering greatly because of this and I don't know what to do. The ADHD quiz that I took said that I should see a doctor immediately, but I don't have the financial means to do so. I am an 18 year old college student living on my own and working less than 25 hours a week at just over minimum wage. What can I do? If my grades keep suffering, my future will go along with it.

Have you sought services through your college?
I know at my university a student can get some type of insurance through the university to help with medications and the like. You might want to try seeing if your Health Center, Counseling Center (if your school has one), or Office for Disabled students has any information that could help you out. I'm in a similar situation--struggling with college work due to not being able to concentrate. I'm pretty sure that I have undiagnosed ADHD. Right now I'm seeking out my options and hoping to get tested for it soooon. Best of luck to you! |
