My son in 5yrs old. He can sit and watch a movie or have a book read to him, but he picks at his nails and goes like stur crazy when he's kept in a small place (like my parents 5th wheel camper). My mother swears that he is ADHD because I have a cousin that was diganosed (but I totally don't think he is, but that's another story) and my son's dad was put on meds to it, but come to find out that was only because his parents were lazy. My son can focus to learn his weekly verse for church. He can sit still at the doctor's if need be. But I mean he's 5 yrs old. And a boy. Aren't 5yr old boys like that?

busiemommie, it sounds to me like your son is a normal 5yr old boy. I am not a dr though and cannot make a diagnosis. My daughter is ADHD and she is not able to sit through a movie or read a book. She also is very fidgity and talkative (loud). She will start about 5 different things and not finish one. I have to tell her what to do one thing at a time. ie: pick up your shoes. take them to the bedroom. put them away. She cannot follow those if I tell them all at once. She has problems learning, and retaining the information. She is a distraction in class, and any movement, sound, sight will distract her. If you are really worried about it, talk to his pediatrician; otherwise let others state their opinions and carry on with your life.

The first thing I would ask someone who thinks a child has ADHD and/or would like to medicate the child is, "Is it a problem for the child, or mostly for someone else?" If a child is having difficulties learning, developing, enjoying life, etc., then I am in favor of treating those problems. When an adult is frustrated with keeping up with the child's energy level or providing enough activity to keep the child interested and engaged, it is more likely an environment not well suited to the child's needs (when the problem is occurring - not saying that anyone is doing anything wrong, but that maybe some activities or lack thereof might not be optimal and could be revisited.)

I don't think your son has ADHD. Sounds like a normal 5 yr old to me. If you are doubting yourself (and need proof for your Mom), you could google ADHD symptoms DSM-IV--that should put your mind to rest and reassure your Mom.
Hope it helps!
Take care~
