I'm 19 years old and I am getting a little annoyed with people treated me like I am younger than I am. My peers, for example, they treat me like a child or like they have some sort of maturity advantage on me.

I don't really get it. I'm not immature. I may talk fast, change subjects a lot, and make people laugh, but I know when it is time to be serious.

For example...

1) I compose music, and when I get a 12 person vocal ensemble together they seem to want to joke around and think I'm OK with it. I'm not.

2) I like to joke, but sometimes it gets old. Like making fun of me for talking too fast or being scatterbrained. It's frustrating.

3) I'm really smart. I've always been smart. I'm in the honors program at my college, in the freshman honors society, and on the dean's list. And when people have some sort of problem that I think the answer or solution is common sense, they are like "wow you're smart" and they always sound so surprised. Even the people who have known me for a long time.

Yes I'm smart. I know how to think, but why is that a surprise? Do they think Why do they think I'm not? I may zone out and not pay much attention during class, but I always make A's anyway, because I can figure things out. I just don't get what makes me seem dumb or immature to them.

BatsandButterflies,

Don't worry about them. They are making fun of you because they are immature and ignorant. Go about your business and don't worry about the people that are making fun of you. When people told me I could do something or made fun of me I went out and showed them that I am capable. People like that are not going to be successful if they continue to be immature.

Hope this helped,

Crazyman

I just wish I was taken seriously. Because I am an intelligent and mature person. Yet they don't see it.

There will be a lot more opportunities ahead of you to prove yourself. All that matters now is that you are successful in college and on your way to a successful career.

Sometimes it seems, unfortunately, that people think silly people are "Stupid." I got that a lot at work. And serious people are smart. Its just a double standard.
Thanks for this!

I agree. I guess I don't really have to prove anything to anyone. I just hate having to work 10 times harder than everyone else just to be recognized.

Yep I have been there and done that. I still have people, my parents a times that doubt me as well. But I guess we have to keep moving forward. I also agree with the double standard. Never thought of it that way. Thanks!

I know exactly how you feel. There are, I'll admit, quite a few ways in which I'm less mature than my classmates. Many of my friends combine my behavior with my height and petite-ness and like to tease me as if I were seven, which I'm fine with for a joke or two, but when they actually treat me like I'm a kid, it very annoying. The best thing I can say is to find a friend who really understands you and knows the difference between behavior and intelligence. That friend would definitely help whenever you feel annoyed or aggravated my others.
