Well here I am, I was first diagnosed almost 20 yrs ago, but am in college again so had to get retested, which of course showed I still have it. I only take 2 classes at a time, but still have to spend hours every day studying and doing homework, and yet sometimes I still barely pass. My school only gives me double time on tests, but this really doesnt help much. I guess I thought once I got diagnosed I would get help. I'm not sure what else to do, I'm not on medication. I dont have insurance, there's a mental health clinic here, but all they want to do is have you come in every 2 weeks to talk to a therapist, they dont do anything but have you sitting around in a waiting room an hour each time. I had to pay $250 for the testing, at this point it seems like a waste of money. Anyone have any suggestions?

What were you hoping to get from being tested? The main treatments are medication and a special type of therapy to help with organization, etc. Do you want either or both of those? Do you want additional accommodations from the school?

A test doesn't do anything other than indicate directions for treatment. Like sunrise said, what do you want to get out of it?

If you're getting double time on tests, you're already getting accommodations. Medication is what helps me the most; even if you don't have insurance it might be worth looking into.

Im not sure, I used to be on Ritalyn (?) and it worked really well, but the clinic here cant prescribe it, they tried some others which raised my blood pressure sky high and gave me headaches. I dont really need help with organization, Ive spent yrs teaching myself how to be organized. Schools, working, etc. - when you try to get help they always say they cant do anything unless they have documentation, so I got it. Everything is an hr or more away, and my classes are online, so I think they cant see why I would need extra time for assignments.

By "they", do you mean your college? They should be able to tell you what accommodations they can provide for students with ADHD, because a lot of students have this, so they must have it all worked out. If they can give you a list of accommodations that are available, it seems like you could choose which ones would help you? What did you mean that everything is an hr or more away?

That's too bad the clinic you went to can't prescribe Ritalin. Why don't you take documentation of your ADHD diagnosis and go to a full service clinic that can prescribe whatever medication you need? Also take information on the meds you were prescribed that didn't help.

Good luck.
