I was diagnosed with ADHD (mixtype) in March. Since then, my doctor put me on Concerta and Vyvanse. I started out with Concerta. We tried multiple different doses of the Concerta. At first, I tried 18mg but it did nothing for me. We moved up to 36 and subsequently 54. Regardless of the dosage, I didn't feel anything from the Concerta and my doctor told me that it is not unusual for the first medication not to work. She put me on Vyvanse. I tried 30 and 60 mg, but both just didn't feel right. I went of 40 mg and the first day was great! The first day felt really good, and I thought I found the right medication for me, but the next day, it did work nearly as well again! I have since been sticking to 40mg of Vyvanse.

I just wanted to know: is it normal for 2 different medications not to work? How do I find the right one? Since the meds aren't working, does that mean I don't have ADHD? Any other suggestions for a long lasting ADHD medication?

Thanks!

Yes that's normal. I've tried concerta, focalin, and strattera before eventually being put on adderall. I have only seen any results on adderall and had no progress on the others. The only serious results I experience are from relatively high doses of adderall. It varies for everyone.

Medication for ADHD can be quite difficult... takes a lot of fine tuning...

Don't know what to tell ya about concerta, I was on it and i liked it a lot. Never tried vyvanse. When you say the first day of vyvanse felt "really good" what does that mean? If neither med is working, maybe try something else? I have heard good things about Adderall, and I was on strattera for a while (a non stimulant).

Just because those meds weren't the right fit doesn't mean you don't have ADHD. If just means that those weren't the right ones.

I wish I had some suggestions to add to help you out. All I can say is stick with it! It will be so worth it if you find the proper prescription that works well. I started on adderall right away and it has been perfect. I got lucky me and my psychiatrist nailed it on the first attempt. after that it was getting the amount and doses right. took about 2 months to get it right.

Thanks everyone!

One last question. Is there a certain medication that works better for a certain "type" of ADHD. For example is there a medication that tends to work better for those with Inattentive than Hyperactive? If so which med would work best for me?

I am a 16 year old. I have mix type, so I am almost always doing something with my hands, and I can get easily excited, but I also get easily zoneout and disorganized so that I am procrastinating something simple like sending an email until there is dire need to send it. I also have very fickle emotions: easily upset, or easily saddened/excited.

Thanks again!

Thanks for the replies everyone!

I've got one more question. So are there any medications that are known to work better for a specific type of ADHD? For example, is there a certain medication that is the best treatment for inattentive type over hyperactive type. Any recommendations for a medication that is the best treatment for my type of ADHD?

I am a 16 year old. I have inattentive mixed with hyperactivity. I can get very hyper and overly emotional, but I also daze off and get very disorganized an end up procrastinating. Any suggestions for which medication I should talk to my doctor about trying next?

I don't know. I don't think so. I know that adderall successfully treats both my inattentiveness and hyperactivity, however it does a better job treating the inattentiveness for me. A big part of my hyperactivity is channeled through constantly shaking my leg. Adderall gives me a lot more energy and it really helps with my leg shaking. However, it does give me more energy just in general so I could see where that might not benefit someone extremely hyperactive. I don't know though if any of the drugs work best for one type vs another.

There are no adhd medications that treat specific sub type. It is all in what you and your doctor finds works well for you.what does not work for you may work quite well for someone else. Just a matter of finding the right medication dosage and combination if more then one is used.

I need to find the right medication too. I just started with Vyvanse and I haven't noticed any change other than not being able to sleep last night.
