So... when my wife gets a book she likes, she can get through it in a couple of days. Apparently that's common and people typically can do that.
Me reading: "It was a dark and scary night.." Hmm, what did I just read? So I read the line again to make sure I am following the story. Hmm, nope still didn't sink in. Read it a 3rd time. Ok, I think I got it, lets move on to the second sentence. The second sentence may be a little better, but eventually, a few sentences later, I will get "stuck" like that again and need to re-read things. Bottom line, it takes me months to get through 1 book. I've been this way since I was a kid. Taking tests in school where I had to read the paragraph and answer the questions. Instant failure. I never got treatment, so it continues to today. I am 48 years old. Is it even worth seeking treatment at this point? |

Ya I'm sure people would be like "It's not THAT bad.." but it is.. it really is..
It would definitely be worth treatment. Not too late. |

Tonyh,
I'm 42 and just recently went back on meds. Last time I took anything I was six years old! It's been well worth it. I am able to see and do things that un-medicated me wasn't able to see and do before. As I see it, I still have half of my life to go. I choose to live it with my ADD a bit more under control. |

I don't think it's ever too late to get help. Medication can really help. I totally feel you on the whole reading thing. Reading can be the bane of my existence. If I like the book, I can hyperfocus and read the entire thing in one sitting (e.g. I read the entire Twilight Saga- 5 novels- in one weekend). But if its school work, geez! Medication can really help you grit your teeth and just read the thing and actually understand it.

I definitely experience this all the time!! It seems like particular authors or writing styles are more difficult to understand. My professors literally wrote the textbook for some of my courses...and they're terrible at it. While the books were accurate their writing styles are very strange and organized illogically. I literally spent days reading a single chapter.
Now a graduate, I spend my days researching books and articles written by authors and publishers that will likely be the easiest for me to read based on reading their past materials....as long as they're reputable and relevant, of course. After that random ramble; you're not alone! |
