Has anyone experienced a worsening of or the onset of mood swings with daytrana?
My daughter has a hard time swallowing pills so we've been putting her Strattera in food but it is so bitter virtually no food disguises it well enough. Her psychiatrist is contemplating changing her to a med that comes in patch form. I'm concerned because she has mild anxiety and is prone to mood swings. Strattera is helping her in several ways but it's so difficult to get it into her without a big fuss. Of course I'm going to discuss this with her psychiatrist but I'd like to hear first hand accounts from people who have actually used this product. While everyone is different, there are some meds that have side effects that are very common. I need to know if mood swings are one of them from actual users of the stuff. |

Daytrana is the same as Ritalin and concerta I think (methylphenidate).
Maybe you could get a Ritalin pill and dissolve it in a glass of water. Or crush it up and put it in food. (Don't mention the second one to your doctor lol). But no I've never tired Daytrana. Since it is methylphenidate, it acts as a mood stabilizer for most people including myself. But for most people they get more anxious when they take it. Over time it should get better. But there is this for some people; Serious mental (psychiatric) problems have been reported with the Daytrana patch or other stimulant medicines including: - new or worse aggressive behavior, hostility, anger or irritability - new or worse bipolar illness or mania (an extreme increase in activity or talking) - new or worse psychosis (hearing or seeing things that are not real, being suspicious, or distrustful, believing things that are not true) - other unusual or extreme changes in behavior or mood |

Personally, I'd recommend try mixing it in a "Snack Pack" type of pudding (if you haven't already). It really helps those who have problems swallowing pills with juice, water, or applesauce. *Best wishes to you*

Daytrana was is the best ADHD medication my son has been on. However my son takes lamictal and abilify for mood swings (both have desolvable options). If he does well on abilify lamictal will be slowly removed.

After several tries with other meds putting them in pudding, we're back to the patch. We went off of it, as he'd come home from school with a very stern look on his face, and very tired. Also it left red spots and a rash. He doesn't do well with any kind of adhesive really. His neuro said it's okay to cut like a 1/5 off to see if that helps with the strength, however I still have not found a way to cut back on the rashes, and sometime broken skin due to his stratching.. Any suggestions?

Today is day four on the patch. We are alternating hips as recommended and she seems to be ok. My major concern is with mood. I haven't seen any worsening of her mood so far but I will be keeping a close eye on it. Personally, I think she was doing better with the Strattera but getting her to swallow it is a lost cause. We've tried many of the tricks suggested. My daughter is stubborn. Not only stubborn but she also has trouble with self awareness. Even though I saw a change in her with Strattera, she would say that she didn't feel any different. Same now with the patches. When asked how she is feeling, the typical response is that she does not know. So, I have to rely upon what I see. Not a perfect method but it's all I've got to go on. We've tried several exercises meant to get her more self aware but either she's throwing up road blocks or she truly is not in touch with her internal states.

When I was on it I loved it because it was the only one that didn't screw with my mood.
