son is being really dificult at the moment, its the weekend no meds are meant to be given, his behaviour is just realy getting on my nerves, agrivating and argumentive with everyone near him, so much so i insisted taking him with us when we popped to the bank, i was that stressed i nearly went into the back of another car, pulled into the nearest layby and just cried.
it has now got to 1pm and i have given in and gave him 10mg of ritilin just to take the edge of
if i cant get through a weekend how are we supposed to cope with summer holidays 6 whole weeks with out meds,

Forgive me for being naive (we're not on any meds yet for ADD) but what's the reasoning for taking your son off meds during weekends or school breaks?

My mom worked at a grammar school for 30 years and saw children who went off their meds for the weekend. SHe said the kids were horrible until the ritalin kicked in half-way through Monday. Wouldn't it be easier to keep the child on an even keel instead of messing up his chemistry?

Please don't take this the wrong way. Big Hugs to you!

here in britain they don't agree to giving meds after you finish your education , which is either 16yrs end of school or 18yrs end of collage, so to make sure son will cope without his meds at the age of 16 he has to leave his meds of for the six week summer break,
the reason not to have meds at weekends is to give the system a break from the drug son takes concerta 5 days a week it works within a half hour of taking it, slows down his appetite and all,
he has ritilin i can give him at weekends but were advised to try to limit this to little as possible to get him ready for the six week holidays,
if son cant manage without meds in extreme cases they will look at giving something else but wont know until his next apointment, the ritlin med is normally used to aid concentration while in group situations, so works better on school days, hope i have explained this ok

very stressed I understand the reasoning behind not wanting to give drugs to kids past a certain point (I have several friends who've been totally screwed over by high-caliber drugs, Ritalin included), but it seems to me that, were I your son, I'd hate to have those weird highs and lows happening to me every week. A consistent, lower dosage makes a bit more sense from my angle, but then again I'm no doctor. As a mom, you should be doing what you feel is best for your children.

(((((((((((((((((Kathy)))))))))))))))))) Hugs for you, and good luck in this tough situation!! (I know this is a really late reply, but even so... ) I hope things have improved since you posted this, and you're less stressed than you were. very stressed

had anappointment with our gp today took son to explain how dificult the last two weeks of school holidays has been while sons not been having his meds, he said if son needs his meds i should give them to him, i explained that he is on slow release med so he sugested to that son wakes about 8am to take med on school holidays and weekend,
and only stick to concerta and not give ritlin over week ends as the diferance in dosage was a lot,
he said i should tell sons consultant that we are struggling with the med breaks, also he said it might be possible to continue meds if they are helping son and they seem to be
