I'm looking for advice and maybe some input from someone with experience with this.
I'm trying to get a job that requires extensive psychological evaluations before employment. I've had to take the MMPI 2 several times as my results on that test point me to having ADHD. I'm now to a point where I'm required to take neuropsychological screening with an EEG to determine whether or not I'm ADHD. It's a public safety job so the requirements are fairly stringent. I wanted to see if anyone here had any experience with this sort of testing, and how to find someone fair/unbiased that will give me a fair assessment. I feel as though the psychologists I've worked with up til now have only looked at the MMPI results and then cherry picked aspects of my personality (poor grades in college, a few speeding tickets were cited specifically) that pointed to irresponsible and reckless behavior indicating that I'm ADHD and that agreed with the MMPI results and an Rorschach test. They ignored the 2 degrees I obtained in spite of my grades, and the job that I'd held for 5 years and been promoted multiple times in. Sorry, there's a little bitterness here. It's been a stressful 4 years going after this position but I'm not going to give up yet. I'd appreciate any thoughts and insight. Thank you. |

flownaway15, Hello and welcome to PC. I have taken the MMPI 2 test and a personality test. They both were administered to me on a computer. My psychologist told me that I did not have ADD. Here is the frustrating thing. I do not have a big problem with attention as I can hyper-focus. What I do have is hyperactive/impulsivity combined type ADHD. This psychologist was ready to exclude me from an ADHD dx. Then I left her and was diagnosed by a pdoc and a therapist. I believe that I do have ADHD with the H in bold.
Since I am an older adult, giving my history was the most telling sign that I was missed getting a dx as a child as I was a girl. I am guessing that you are a male. You do not need to disclose that but boys get this dx 20 times more than girls. It is sad. I am wondering why the ADHD had to ever come up? Just because you got speeding tickets and poor grades in school does not mean that you have ADHD. I would go to another psychologist and not just rely on those tests as they alone are not enough to rule in or out ADD or ADHD. I hope that you get this figured out. I do not trust these tests. Talking to a psychologist is your best bet at getting this worked out. You may be able to get a letter stating that you do not have it or it is not a deterrent for getting that job. Best of luck to you. |

An EEG has nothing to do with ADHD. Neuropsych testing should show ADD if you do have it. You can find a neuropsychologist/psychiatrist through any large teaching hospital. You may have to travel to find a good one. It's a pretty specialized area.
