I was diagnosed first by a psychologist based on observations, history, etc.

I decided to be evaluated by a neuropsychologist who did a whole battery of tests. You can opt to do it over either one or two days. It's about 6-7 hours of testing. They do everything from IQ tests, to spacial reasoning tests, to memory tests, and everything in between. Some are administered on paper, some are computerized to test accuracy and reflexes (for the hyperactive/impulsive part of the ADD). This test will be able to alert them of anything from ADHD to dyslexia to processing disorders. I found it very helpful. They gave me about a 10 page report and they were very happy to talk to my school. This type of testing is available to both kids and adults (kids can do it sometimes through the US public school system). The one thing is that it might not be covered by insurance if you opt to do it through a person of your choosing. And it can be kind of pricey. mine was about 2000$ but I only had to pay about 200$ because of already meeting the insurance deductible.
