Why did/would this be am effective treatment for ADHD? I find the more "grounded" I am, the more I'm able to stay on task. Mindfulness is based on being "in the moment". But I'd like to know the science/mechanics behind all of this.

There is no quantitative data on something like this. The mind being a hypothetical construct of the brain, is consciousness or self awareness is a qualitative notion. Our collective knowledge on things concerning the mind is incipient at best. What is known is likely to be a statistical correlation between the use of mindfulness meditation and self reported mood or self reported state of being. And that is going to be the best you will get at this point. Maybe you can find brainwave vs meditation data but there is a lot of Interpretation of what that means. The good thing is giving it an honest try for a month or so has a probability of imposing any negative consequence of like .00000001. Meaning it won't hurt you, but it may help. That's my 3 cents fwiw.
