I also got diagnosed in adulthood, around six weeks ago. Having medication for it has definitely been helping tremendously. The doctor seemed surprised that I had symptoms yet hadn't been diagnosed.

I'm not ADHD but I got diagnosed with bipolar when I was 59 years old. I've led a very interesting and rather bizarre life.

I'm also ADHD and bipolar, but I got diagnosed with bipolar when I was 16 and ADHD only recently (I'm 19)
My mom only got diagnosed with ADHD when she was 46 however, so it was a much later diagnosis for her. A funny thing about my diagnosis was that since my mom has been diagnosed, my family has been observing my sister's behavior and my behavior and everyone suspected ADHD before I did. However, I'm not on any medication for it yet, as my psychiatrist is trying to figure out what would work best with my current cocktail (12 meds!)

I started being treated for ADD at the age of 33. I don't think any of the psychiatrists I've seen are entirely sure about this diagnosis, but my symptoms seem to fit pretty well, so I think I have it to some degree. I also have depressive symptoms though and sometimes they're quite similar. Ritalin helped me quite a lot for a while anyway (better concentration, motivation, confidence).
I too wonder if it would have helped if I'd been diagnosed earlier. I don't know. I guess I still would have needed to learn how to manage myself, medicated or not. At least now I'm older I have a better chance of figuring out how to use medication in a way that works for me, whilst staying realistic in my expectations of myself. I don't think I could have done that so well as a child or young adult, and I doubt anyone could have done it for me. Having said that, early recognition and some (patient) help or at least acceptance of our difficulties as children would probably have been better for our self esteem, huh? |

I am 65. Was recently diagnosed with inattentive ADHD. Knew about Hyperactive but I couldn't own it. Have been taking short-acting stimulants for about 11 years. Off-label use for depression. Have been to many psychiatrists over the years for depression. No success with any SSRIs' and I have been on all of them. I had one psychiatrist flip-out on me when I asked about stimulants for treatment of depression. GP put me on generic Adderall when I requested. Only drug that gave me any relief from all my co-morbid MH diagnosis. Going back to current MH doc in January. I relate to symptoms of RSD. Just found out about condition. Want to try hypertensive drugs for treatment of that condition. I have had borderline hypertension for years may be able to get double bang for my buck.
