Hi,
I took your test and scored a 30, I constantly struggle to get work done, especially school work. As a result unfortunately my grades plummeted. It only started at the beggining of my school year, at first it was controllable but know im finding myself doing a entire essay or project in a night while the teacher gave me a month to do it, I feel almost like im in a constant cruise control...something else is driving me. Actually when I took the test every question related to me. As im typing know, I cant get myself to do a science project, its very frustrating ![]() How do I approach my parents on this? |

Copper,
Let me preface my comments with... I am not a doctor, psychiatrist, or psychologist. I would not jump straight to a diagnosis of ADHD. Sometimes ADHD is diagnosed after other conditions are systematically ruled out. I think we need to be very cautious about blaming ADHD for all of our life struggles. It is my understanding that ADHD typically requires a significant deficit or impairment in at least 2 or more environments (school, home, work, social situations). Also ADHD usually just doesn't appear and disappear. It is a condition that people have throughout their life. When looking back in time there is a consistent baseline of symptoms that are relatively constant ALL the time. There are different types of ADHD so the symptoms can be different. However for example lack of attention, impulsiveness, or hyperactivity will be consistent symptoms during different activities (sports participation, classroom, church, playground, interactions at home). In my own personal journey, I always knew I had trouble focusing and was a bit hyper. Others would describe me as scatterbrained, the energizer bunny, or simply not the sharpest tool in the shed. For example I have always had trouble settling down and reading a textbook. But this problem is not just limited to academic reading, I also have trouble settling down and reading a really interesting novel too. I also think that (just like for “normal” people) stress, anxiety, depression, adolescent hormones, over scheduling, and sheer boredom can reduce a person’s ability to concentrate, focus, or get motivated. These conditions exacerbate many of the symptoms ADHD suffers already have. I my own experience with pharmacological treatment of ADHD I can say the following. For me Adderall has not: <ul type="square"> stopped my tendency for procrastination, changed my personality, increased my interest in performing non-preferred tasks (homework, paper writing, reading boring stuff, sitting through committee meetings, etc), made me smarter, improved my memory, eliminated the need to spend time studying, helped me prioritize my to do list, or improved my motivation or attitude toward scholarship.[/list] At least for me, taking my Adderall has helped me stay on tasks a little bit better, has reduce my fidgeting, has made it easier for me deal with interruption a little bit better. I can now start, stop, and restart a task without taking a lot of time to refocus. I would also say that my train of thought seems to flow a little better (not sure exactly how to describe it). Therapy has helped me address some of the life stresses that were exacerbating my symptoms and reducing my natural abilities to cope with distractibility. Treatment for my ADHD has not been a cure-all. I still have to take responsibility for my actions and work hard to Get’ rr done.
